Don't Compliment Him

I hate it when my parents compliment creeps and consider them gentlemen. It drives me nuts. My sister-in-law's brother is constantly complimented as one of the most handsome gentlemen they've ever met. They always bring him up for a few days after seeing him somewhere and that dies down for a bit, but then continues again when they see them somewhere again.
For instance, we saw him at my niece's party. He stole my hiding place in the backyard and smoked when I wanted to hide there and look up at the sky. He saw me hiding there in the past and took that hiding place for himself to smoke. He's always being like this. He's been like this since we met for the first time 15 years ago.
He smirks at me, calls me names, taunts me, steals my hiding places, sits in my chair, stands directly behind me, follows me everywhere at events, stares at me from across the room, follows my every move with his eyes, grins when I laugh, leans in to listen to my conversations, brushes his arm against mine on purpose, and gets upset when I ignore him. People claim it's because he has feelings for me.
If that's the case, then does that mean my ex-husband, my elderly neighbor's grandson, my ex-boss, and some other creepy men in my life have feelings for me too? Because they all act like this! And my parents compliment all of them as handsome gentlemen! So what if they are handsome? They are no gentlemen!

He very well maybe a good person in general, but you two just don't get along. That does happen. If how they talk him up, bothers you ignore it or tell your family how you feel and see if they stop.

He may be. I have no idea. I try to keep my distance from him because of his behavior. He has been doing this since we were 13 years old and he's still at it. Even back then, he would get into my personal space and lean in to smell me and stuff. I told my parents everything he has done so far every time he did something, but they just brushed me off and told me how they felt about him based on how he acted around them. He is no gentleman. Just like every other creep in my life, he sleeps around and replaces them constantly. I've never ever seen any of these men in my life settle down with a long term girlfriend or a wife. It's always a new woman, a new car, a new motorcycle, etc. They can't settle on anything. I'm just pleased that my brother settled down at all. He was definitely part of that crowd.

@lilacskies People can and do change. Just ignore him, then.

Maybe he doesn't know how to communicate his true feelings. Maybe he is a person who gives off weird energy and people don't know how to deal with him.

He behaves like every other creepy guy in my life. He is the same age as me and we've known each other since we were 13, but he hasn't changed one bit. At my niece's birthday party, he purposely took my hiding place in the backyard and smoked. It was like he was waiting for me. I didn't fall for it. I fell for it years ago when I saw him steal it the first time and then avoided that place altogether. I saw him from a distance. He was facing the house while he was smoking. He's always doing things like this. And he was super angry when he heard I was getting married ten years ago. He went on a rage. It was insane. You would think we were lovers and I betrayed him or something! He calmed down again after I got a divorce, but so what? He's still being like this.

You are lucky. Yes, they are complete creeps! They should at least explain themselves.

@lilacskies It doesn't sound good for you to be around them. Can you stop going to outings when he is there?

We knew each other since we were 13 so back when I was braver and he wasn't such a giant, I had no problems making a scene to scare him off. It didn't work. He became worse and worse. He went from being creepy from a distance to coming close to me and brushing his arm against mine. I don't want to confront him because he might take it to the next level and I don't want to know what that is. I'm treading carefully. He is part of the group of creeps in my life I can't wait to cut off as soon as I'm financially independent enough to move far away.

@noni1959 Yes, it's impacting my health negatively. I wish, but my sister-in-law would go berserk if I skipped out. She is a narcissist. As you can see, I am surrounded by bad people.

That seems creepy to me. But I did get this thought in my head of what if he has a crush on you and that’s why he acts this way?

I know, right? It is creepy. He falls right in with the other creeps in my life. They all act like this. I don't know. The concern is if he has a crush on me, then does that mean the other men in my life who act like this have one too? Because they all act like this. I've known this guy since we were 13. He went into a rage when I got married 10 years ago, calmed down after I got a divorce, and then picked up this behavior once again.

@lilacskies if he went into a rage when you got married maybe he had feelings for you. Unless he’s just got psychological issues. If someone has feelings for you why don’t they just say it? Why do all these things?

@lovebuglena I have no idea. He should just tell me why he is behaving like this. I was standing back and he stood right behind me. I turned around and asked him why he was behaving like this. He just clenched his jaw as he stared at me coldly. Then I would talk with others and he would lean in to listen to what I say. And when I smile, he smiles. When I laugh, he grins. But he gets upset if I talk to men. He even showed up at my workplace when I used to work. He went into a rage when another creep, my ex-boss, started flirting with me. And I was married at the time. He is unhinged, but goes around acting like a gentleman to everyone but me.

It's hard to say for sure, but these are all antics of someone in pursuit of another. Doesn't mean they all win the pursuit of course. Doesn't mean someone being pursued wants the pursuit. But they are all tell-tale signs of someone pursuing someone.

This is not good news at all. I will continue to avoid him as much as possible then.
