They Get You Coming and Going

Is this fair, what do you think? I don't think it's right. But tipped employees get less of a wage then regular employees. You don't always get tipped. In fact, I feel guilty tipping my grocery delivery driver one single dollar but that is all I can afford right now and probably forever in my lifetime. Tipped employees getting less wages is not right. It says the employer has to add a few bucks, yeah right, as if they are going to do that.

It's not fair, but the corporate world doesn't care about fair. They care about profits and that's it.

I always try to tip a decent amount especially if I know the person is relying on tips to offset their wage.

Well you are nice Marilyn of course you do. I do if I can afford it so that's never and my delivery people hate me I am sure. Oh well.

Does the employee have to show what tips they get to the employer?

Actually, the employer has to do a sheet every three months showing the wages of an employee who could make tips along with their base pay and if the base pay and the tips don't add up to enough, the employer must make up the difference. I worked as a manager for a Ken's Pizza and always helped the employees figure out if they were making enough in tips or if the store had to give them a "helping-hand" every three months. There were always some employees who made well over the amount and always a couple of employees who didn't. (The employees who had trouble reaching the specified amount in tips usually got moved to a non-tipping job if they were good employees and might be showed out the door if their work was below what was expected.) You realize that the drivers are paid a base wage for the distance they drive to deliver something, right? They may not expect a tip if you aren't very far from the store. Do I think that's right? Of course not. Every employee should make the same amount from the employer and tips are a bonus from customers thanking the employee for great service.

Yes the thing about how these 'laws' work is that no one has to follow them. That's the catch. Yeah it's not right for sure DE.

@RebeccasFarm If employers didn't HAVE to follow the law, then none of them would follow it.

I'm glad we don't have tipping here. It sounds a nightmare.

@RebeccasFarm No. There is a basic wage but rarely any tipping. Some cafes/restaurants have tip cars at the reception desk.

I heard that there is a no tipping rule in some hotels. And it makes me wonder if those hotel workers are paid enough.

That doesn't sound right nor make sense . . . you'd think the tip is supposed to be "extra" from the customers - not part of the wage.

That means we are paying to the employer by giving a tip.

Should be paid a living wage and tips are an extra if the customer is happy

If employers can’t be trusted, it’s fair on paper only. It would be easier if “tipped” employees just didn’t exist.
