Do you tip on tax?

The restaurant we went to Saturday, it seemed like the suggested tip on the receipt was for the total amount after tax. I found that weird. It’s usually not. I never leave a tip on the total. I always calculate it based on the subtotal. Why should I tip on tax? As we’ve been to this place before we knew they charge a 4% fee for using a credit card so we brought cash with us. I wish restaurants would make it known beforehand that they charge a fee for using a card. This way people would just take cash with them and avoid throwing money away for no reason. Why don’t restaurants do that?

Restaurants don't tell you they have a fee for using a credit card so you'll use a credit card to pay them. That fee is pure profit. And no, tips should only be calculated on the total of your receipt pre-tax. And it still should be up to me if I give a tip or not.

Not everyone walks around with lots of money in their wallet. So if customers know ahead of time that they have to pay a fee when using a card they can just go to the bank beforehand and withdraw some money and avoid that fee.

I hate it that we are required to pay a tip based on how expensive our bill is. Like if I order a steak as opposed to a salad why should my tip be higher just because I order a steak, which is a more expensive item?

@lovebuglena I don't have any credit cards. I pay for everything with a debit card, cash or a check. If they don't accept any of those, I leave.

@lovebuglena I don't do percent. If I had poor service I might not leave any tip. If I had excellent service I leave a good tip

@wolfgirl569 I’m thinking if I should start just leaving a set dollar amount instead a % of the bill. But I have a feeling it will be frowned upon.

Do you tip a set amount or take a % of the bill?

There should not be a tip on the taxed amount. A big no there.

@lovebuglena I guess that is their back up for people who do not tip. Still not right, but I imagine they would use that as an excuse.

They shouldn’t expect a tip when they automatically add a service charge to your bill.

True. And we can’t do anything about that.

I tend to just tip 20% on the total. To me, it's just easier, and the tax is such a small portion of the bill, I don't think it really makes that much of a difference.

To me that’s wasting money lol. And it’s very easy to just take 10% of the subtotal and times that by two.

@porwest sometimes it seems to me like hubby leaves more than 20% tip. I never get that. 20% is more than enough.

@lovebuglena Usually I am not one to waste money. At the same time, I also want to take care of my server is he or she takes care of me.
