Signs Of Spring #4

I'm back with another sign of spring arriving here in the South! See those things popping up out of the ground? Do they look familiar to you? Could it be Gladiolus? YES!! This is a little patch that I didn't plant, but seeds were blown over from in front of my house. There are various colors, but mainly orange ones from what I have noticed so far. I'm anxious to see if more will be popping up this year. Again, we will have to restrain the hubby from moving them down. Nature took care of this one for me!! For those that do not get the last statement, my husband is famous for cutting down flowers and trees here. I started replacing things x 2 and that slowed him down or at least made him think before mowing things down until the year before last when he helped me plant 2 blueberry bushes. That summer he mowed one down! He said he forgot. I think we will have a walk around the yard before mowing time starts this year! Do you have any signs of Spring in your area or new ones for the other people, who are in the South? Photo Credit: My Own

In my garden in Latvia it was always tulips, I got a chuckle for you. One year it was getting warm fast and I went out in the garden I stood looking around and I could not spot any tulips coming up. I looked at my husband and said I guess spring is not here yet there are no tulips. He pointed to where I was standing and said, That is because you are standing on at least one".

Not much, but we are getting there. Why does your husband cut down flowers and trees?

Cause he has a one track mind and when he is on the tractor or mower, all he thinks about is the task at hand.

There are a few more spread out. I'm sure some of them are new and won't bloom this year.

I just spotted snowdrop flowers. Very pretty and welcome. My mini patch of oregano weathered winter just fine. Glads are an annual in my world.

Glad your oregano survived! I want to start a small herb garden here. Do you have yours in full sunlight, partial or shade? I've heard so many different things.

@sallypup It is mild to hot here in the summer. I'm thinking the east side of the house with morning sun will be better than the west side. I was also told to plant in sandy area.

@kareng I think it depends on the climate. My area is milder than where I used to live and we get more rain. Oregano is pretty tough and some folks don't like it cause it tends to want to sprawl and make more oregano. I like ground covers more than grass so I don't mind if it takes over. Same for mint.

Maybe you need some of that paint that they put on grass and around trees.

I put big stakes up, but he runs over them too. I may try some paint but if he mows over it, then that is gone too Maybe putting a flag on the stakes will work. I have some foil ribbon that was recommended to keep hawks away from the chicken coop. Maybe I could use some of that for attention.

@JudyEv Thank you! I'll figure something out! He's going to be in very BIG trouble if he takes down one of the new plum trees!! That will start another war of replacing x 3!!

The biggest sign of spring is that it is 80 degrees today, can you believe it? Then again, it might be that temperature where you are too.

The daffodils popped up a week or so ago when it was still quite cold strangely enough.

Ohhh, how pretty they will be when they start blooming ! We sort of have that issue here too - of things being cut or cleared . . . I literally want to put tags/signs everywhere - do not touch . I think this is one of those years where we jumped from winter directly to summer .

If so, I for one, will not mind after this brutal winter!

I hope that the flowers get tall enough that your hubs will not mistake them and cut them down by accident. Today was a beautiful spring day here, I was able to go out with my quilted jacket (not a winter coat) and my uggs. It was so nice to leave my gloves, boots and scarf at home, and I was warm enough. The snow piles are melting, and there is water running all over the streets and roads, and mixed with the road salt and sand mix, which makes your car dirty-but the temperatures were mild and the sun was shining, so it was okay.

Those are right under a Magnolia figo, or more commonly known as a banana tree. The leaves smell just like a banana when you snap them. The limbs will keep his away from them on the tractor or his mower. So they should be safe! Glad you had nice weather. It was gorgeous here after lunch. Blue skies, warm weather with a high of 72!! No complaints! Tomorrow it is supposed to get up to 75 with sunshine all day. Yay!

Woah, gladiolus! You're so lucky, as long as hubby doesn't cut any. Crazy he managed to mow down the blueberry bush, hopefully a walk around the yard will be enough!
