How a quilt starts

I took a lot of my sister-in-law’s surplus sewing items to my craft group this morning. The ladies there took a lot of the pieces and were very pleased to do so. Shown in the photo are dozens of hexagonal squares which were intended for a quilt. One friend was thrilled to take them. She will organise the pieces to make an interesting pattern. I don’t quilt but I guess it is quite a lot of work just to cut up the pieces. I should have counted them before I gave them away. I also gave one lady a thimble. I still have three and rarely use them so I won’t miss one.

Yeah I am stoked to see the final piece. Although, I understand it would take a good number of days.

That will be a beautiful quilt when she finishes it!! I had one that my grandmother had given me years ago. It was left at our home in Louisiana in one of the girl's care and it got ruined in the flood in 2016. I was so sad and mad about that.

@Dreamerby Right! Oh photographs was something else I had stored in a closet there that I lost...all of our wedding photos and my collection from teen years, all my daughters' baby pictures, etc. Gone!

Things like these happen and yeah we feel guilty about it too. I lost some albums from the time my parents just hot married. Although, it wasn't entirely my fault...but still it's not a nice thing to reckon.

The joy of craftsmanship! I hope you get to see the finished product. As for thimbles, I don’t think I ever used one.

Thimbles, I suppose, are used to protect your fingers. I think many of us don't add that precautionary step lol.

It will be a while I think before I see any results. Just very occasionally I need a thimble.

I still have a small quilt that my Mother made for me when I was young. It is small. But I love it anyway and will not part with it.

It is just so nice that you have found people happy to have what your sister in law doesn't want anymore. It's so nice that the items will be used and enjoyed.

She was having so much trouble letting these things go as mostly op shops wouldn't want them but once I came up with the idea of taking it to the groups, it was much easier for her.

Yeah it would be a wonderful passtime for them. However I think their necks and back would ache a bit after finally sewing all the pieces together

Oh, they will be doing a version of Grandmother's flower garden, I would wager. It will be neat if you can get pictures of the finished top. I "know" about quilting and have put together some small squares, but I have a friend who was making the hexagons and putting them together doing English Paper Piecing. Cool.

I am in the know of this as one of my sisters had made a table cloth using all the remnant pieces of cloth that she had. She used to stitch our clothes.

My Gramma used to measure and mark and cut pieces like that and then stack them and store them in a special container until it was time to start the quilt. I'm sure that your friend appreciated you giving them to her, it is a great start to a completed project for her.

Looks like you made a lot of people happy in your craft group by sharing your sister in law’s surplus sewing items! It is nice that the ladies were so pleased and the hexagonal squares found new homes when they will turn into beautiful quilt pattern. Quilting definitely needs lot of effort especially with organizing and cutting. It is amazing that your friend was excited to take it up. It is always fun to see how others will use craft supplies in creative ways. The thimble is a thoughtful gift as well, and it is nice of you that you were to share something you do not use. Even though you do not count the hexagonal pieces, sounds like the found a good purpose, which is the most important thing. I like others appreciate your generosity and it is lovely that your group can share ideas and supplies. Have a wonderful day ahead!
