Bonfires Are Not My Thing

United States

I don't like nature up close. I like it from a distance. As I do every March, I am going up to my sister-in-law's summer house with my entire family to spend a whole weekend immersing myself in nature. Every March, my sister-in-law checks on her summer house to make sure everything is okay. She fixes everything that needs fixing before she spends a few weeks up there with my brother who is her husband and their two children every summer. They do this every year so they drag our entire family up there for one weekend in March. They don't invite us for the rest of the year, especially not in the summer. That's their own family time. My sister-in-law and her brother have a tradition where they light bonfires in the backyard. There is a large space to light bonfires and sit around them. Bonfires are not my thing. I find them really creepy and dangerous. I don't like the shadows that stretch out from the bonfires. I don't like the surroundings. I don't even like the fact that our faces are practically glowing when we look at each other. The whole aspect of a bonfire is so creepy to me. So that is one more thing I am not looking forward to this weekend besides the fact that I will spend a whole weekend with my sister-in-law and her brother. Hopefully, all goes well and my chronic pain is manageable. I also hope I can catch up on some sleep there. My insomnia isn't getting better at all.

Are you well enough that you can stay home by yourself?

That is a good question. I am well enough to stay home by myself, but I don't want to cause a rift in my family by not going so I'm going with them.

@lilacskies Don't you think, if you go, force yourself to atend, and are miserable anyway that'd cause a rift anyway? Wouldn't it be better if you just took the weekend to yourself, so you might feel better and be mre plesent to be around?

@kaylachan Haha Good question again. The thing is I don't look and appear miserable when I'm in the presence of my family so they never know how I actually feel. I never cause a rift in my family so they don't really notice how I truly feel and there is peace in our family when it comes to me. I'm the least troublesome member in our family. As long as I stay in line and behave myself, everything will be fine. If I cause any kind of trouble, my sister-in-law will be the ringleader in destroying my life.

I love nature, but bonfires aren’t “natural.” I have a strong dislike for fire, to the point where you might say I have a phobia about it.

@lilacskies — as Don McLean said in “American Pie,” “Fire is the devil’s only friend.”

Fires aren't safe anyway. There's something insidious about them.

@FourWalls True. And psychopaths love to set fires! They evolve from arson to murder!

I would consider staying home if you want to catch up on rest. That weekend doesn't sound like fun at all for you. Think about it!!

I can't. If I reject my sister-in-law's offer, she will make my life difficult to say the least. I'm just going to go like I've been doing for the last 15 years. No choice unless I want to end up on her bad side.

I'm sorry Lilac but that sister in law of yours would be having some sort of unfortunate accident around me.

I love everything about the outdoors, day and night. I hope you're not forced to do anything you're not comfortable doing.

I love the stars at night when I'm outdoors at night. I also love night drives. I am a bit, but overall it's not a big deal.
