This year the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans, Louisiana will be on Tuesday, March 4th. Often referred to as "Fat Tuesday" as it is the day before Ash Wednesday. This marks the beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar. It also falls on the last day of Carnival season which is a period of festivals and feasting that leads up to the 40-day Lenten fast. Ash Wednesday occurs 46 days before Easter each year and a different Tuesday always in February or March. The origin of Mardi Gras dates back to the 1700s in Louisiana as an annual carnival with parades through the French Quarter. The festivities included throwing colorful beads and eating king cakes. Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the country take part in the events and activities such as social clubs (known as krewes) which each showcase their floats in the main parade. The picture is from my collection.

I don't celebrate, but I'm aware of the beads tradition and the aluminum coins as well. I don't do well with crowds so I avoid public events as much as possible.

I used to want to go and experience it but not anymore. I'd still go there for the food though.

@celticeagle With all the violence out there, it's best to skip. The food does sound appetizing although not healthy. What do you want to eat?

@lilacskies ......There are several things like Jumbalya that I'd like to try. I would research it before I went to see which restaurants have which favorites that sound good and I want to try.

I used to want to go and had it on my bucket list but over the years, decided it's no longer something I do. Too many people, crime etc. Interesting how it came about.

I did the same but now I have an aversion to crowds. There is a place you can go and watch the street actions. I can't remember the URL for it though.
