When I lived in Metairie from 1978-2009, my relatives and myself were able to see parades in person which were great to see up close and personal.

Yes, I saw many in my life. I grew up in Bogalusa. We had parades there and my grandmother lived in Covington. Some of the New Orleans parades rolled in NO and then came across the Causeway into Covington. And then later when we moved to Baton Rouge, parades there, but I found them to be a bit boring compared to the NO parades and floats!!

No, but I do know it's wild every year. I used to collect the colorful aluminum coins from the parades. Coworkers would gift them after coming back from the parades. I had so many.

Doubloons!! Yes, I used to collect them also and had a chest full of them! They were colorful, came in all colors and each parade printed their own. You don't see too many of those anymore!

@lilacskies Yes, they were made of aluminum and gold, silver, purple, blue, yellow and probably more colors, but those are the ones I remember. I have a couple left, but couldn't tell you where they are now.

@kareng Right! I forgot the name of them. Yes, that's what they were called. They are colorful aluminum coins, right? They are engraved with a design and a year. I had so many years ago. You are right. I think a lot of the parades discontinued them due to cost. You can only find them on eBay. Some sellers post them for sale.

No, closest I got was touring the Mardi Gras museum and seeing all those awesome floats in there

I couldn’t even imagine. I was in the French Quarter on New Year’s Eve one year, and that was enough insanity for me.

It is totally wild. I'm not allowed to go anymore because of all the crime down there.

It used to be. But now there is so much crime that I'm not allowed to go. I have great memories of parades growing up though. Gotta love being married to someone in law enforcement! It has its pros and cons!

@kareng What a crying shame that it's now unsafe. Very sad. Sydney has just had its big Mardi Gras.
