Everybody mambo!! It’s Taco Tuesday and I’ve had my taco, so now it’s time to enjoy a song from 70 years ago that goes well with a taco…or anything, for that matter. Let’s get to the single biggest hit of 1955.
Cherry Pink (and Apple Blossom White) - Pérez Prado
Your trivia for the day: remember that hit “Mambo No. 5” a few years ago? That was originally by Pérez Prado. You’re welcome.
This song hit #1 on April 30, 1955, and didn’t leave the top spot on the chart until July 9 (when it was ousted by “Rock Around the Clock”). That’s nine weeks at #1. Obviously lots of people loved to mambo back then.
You know how I love to play six degrees. Well, this song began as “Cerisiers Roses et Pommiers Blancs,” written by Louiguy. Yesterday I mentioned to April about watching a documentary on Édith Piaf. Guess who co-wrote one of her biggest hits, “La Vie en Rose”? Louiguy! No, I don’t plan any of this. I just have too many musical rabbit holes.
Anyway, this song was a massive hit, to the point where there were versions all over the place. For the record, Prado’s hit was a “cover,” not just of the French original but of the “translated” version. It was originally recorded in English (yes, with lyrics, written by Mack David, brother of Burt Bacharach’s songwriting partner Hal David) in 1951 by Her Nibs, Miss Georgia Gibbs.
This is way too much for such a short song. You should be doing the mambo to this!

My husband sang it beautifully with his baritone voice range.

@allknowing — oooh! That is gorgeous! Did Bing ever pay your husband for stealing his voice?

There were lots of Instrumentals in the charts in the 50’s and 60’s. More of a rarity after that.
This tune is a bit too “Brassy” for my liking. So, sadly, it’s a No from me.

@FourWalls I wasn’t a fan of Herb Albert, so not familiar with the album. I’ve just looked it up, and boy oh boy. Wow! Who cares about the music?

The vocal version with Georgia Gibbs is terrific. I’ve been listening to her a lot lately.
So you bought the Herb Alpert “Whipped Cream” album just for the album cover.

I know, but I do enjoy this song. I’ll listen to pretty much anything once. TWICE is another story.

No lyrics in this version, so make up your own! Or you can dance like nobody’s watching.
Good to see you back!

We had an album of 50s hits (mostly pop) when I was a kid, and this was on it.

I believe the version I heard and liked was by Pat Boone,

His version was in 1961, so maybe he learned not to release a version competing with 12 other versions at the same time.

I know. I used to hear it occasionally…of course, I don’t listen to the radio anymore, so I’d never know if they did still play it.

I think it was popular everywhere. We had a rhumba and mambo era of popularity in the 50s and early 60s.
