Debunking an old wives' tale

There is a lot of blurring between ‘traditional medicine’ and ‘old wives’ tales’ and often you just don’t know how much truth there may be in such things. Sometimes for example, use of a herbal treatment may turn out to have a sound scientific basis; other ideas may turn out to be just myths.
I was chatting to our Italian lodger the other day and for some reason the conversation turned to birth marks. He told me that in Italy it is commonly believed that a birth mark is caused by the mother not consuming enough of whatever her body needs.
Basically, during pregnancy, if a mother has a food craving, and she doesn't fulfil that craving, and then she scratches herself, the child will be born with a birth mark in the shape of the food the mother was craving. The mark would appear, naturally, on the part of the body the woman scratches.
Interesting theory!
I told him that my friend has a birthmark shaped exactly like an elephant. Presumably his mother didn’t consume enough elephants when she was pregnant.
I suspect this old wives’ tale is just that

When I was in school, if you dried out the scrapings from the inside of a banana peel, you could smoke it and get high. I know several guys tried it and were disappointed.

@DaddyEvil I thought it was the entire peel... (no, never did it).

When my next sister was pregnant with #1, she craved chocolate... #1 turned out to be a chocoholic. When she was pregnant with #2, she craved fresh veggies, especially carrots... #2 loooves carrots.

My mother was keen on cheese apparently - my favourite food. I have often wondered, do I like cheese because she ate it, or did she eat it because I was already demanding it?
I ate plenty of vegetables when pregnant but that doesn't seem to have come through for Little One, at least not yet!

@Fleura That is quite unusual. I have a birthmark on the back of one of my thighs. I need to ask my husband if it looks like anything in particular. I haven’t glanced at it in forever. I don’t recall it looking like anything.

I don't have a photo of the birth mark, but the little elephant figurine in the picture is the closest thing I could find. When my friend told me he had an elephant-shaped birth mark I thought maybe it would just have a hint of a suggestion of an elephant about it, maybe, if you squinted in a certain light.... but no, when he showed me the mark (on his back, in case you wondered) it is the EXACT image of an elephant!

@Fleura That's very interesting and I wouldn't have asked but thank you for telling me.
I don't have any birthmarks and, as far as I can remember, neither did any of my siblings. Mom had a big, round birthmark on her arm. Hopefully, it wasn't shaped like anything grandma hadn't eaten enough of while pregnant with mom. The birthmark was dark brown, extremely hairy and looked disgusting. (I never told mom it looked disgusting, of course.)

@DaddyEvil Presumably her mother didn't eat enough wombats or something!

My mother believed some of those things too.
