What it's like being an air traffic controller. What are some of the odd jobs you've considered?

At one point in my life, I considered being (becoming) an air traffic controller, or whatever it's called. I have a level head, and a good sense of spatial orientation. One family member was a fighter pilot, and another was a paratrooper in Vietnam. I have always been interested in aviation, and used to make model airplanes with my dad as a kid. Now, as a psychologist, I use air traffic communications as a model for good (clear) communication in therapeutic situations. I understand that some people in politics right now are being hard on the aviation industry. They are trying to lay off essential people, including air traffic controllers, I believe. I don't know the nuts and bolts, but I believe what is happening could put additional stress on individuals already involved in stressful jobs. We have seen an increase in airplane incidents in recent months. I will attach a good (relatively brief) video of what it's like to be an air traffic controller. It involves an airplane that was difficult to control, in traffic with commercial jets and other aircraft all around It. The controller remained calm and focused. Would you want this job? Have you ever considered jobs that you never actually pursued? I think I am glad I chose the path I chose.

I considered taking up seasonal work like picking fruits and vegetables in foreign countries, but I never pursued that. Plane tickets are expensive and so is getting a passport. I'm working on saving up for the latter for now.

Nowhere to pick in your own area?

@BarBaraPrz Not in my state, no. I can leave the state, but those jobs are fully taken. Seasonal work overseas is an adventure for 20-somethings like me, so I was interested.

I would not like to be an air pilot controller!! To much stress there!! I did consider going back into a job at the radio station as a DJ after I got married. When we got married, my husband wanted me to quit my job, which I did. I had a full time job at a national industrial safetywear distributor as Office Manager, Inside Sales and Outside Sales with a territory. It was a good job, but our branch was eventually dissolved and accounts were halved between Birmingham and Houston. When I decided to go back to work my old location was gone. There was talk of this around the time I quit and I had job offers from both Birmingham and Houston. In looking back, it may have been the way to go because my husband left the family business and went into law enforcement. That was always stressful for me!

Listening to that, I just kept imagining Bob Newhart in the control tower...

@TheHorse I keep telling the weather to Stop It! Sometimes it works. And yes, this is from where I got the idea.

I couldn't do it. The technical aspect is just too much for me - the terms, the numbers, etc. - although I think I have a good spatial orientation sense. Plus it's a huge responsibility - not sure I could handle that - it's not a video game. I considered a lot of career paths . . . though they may not be "odd". Zoology, journalism, physical therapy, business (I got a certificate for it in high school but never did anything with it), floriculture . . . oh a lot things.

@TheHorse Visual arts - mainly graphic design in the printing industry. But I've been a stay-at-home mom for the past 2 decades. In high school, I did take journalism . . . was part of the school newsletter and yearbook staff. I got accepted into college as a journalism major, but before I graduated high school a fellow artist classmate convinced me to switch majors to art.

What has been your main gig? I do have a bit of a history in the journalism world.

Air traffic control is definitely one of the most high-stakes, high-pressure jobs out there. I don't think it is for me

I couldn't watch the video for some reason. Umm, nothing too weird but I did think of being a flight attendant.

I have, yes. I think you would be good at this. I think there needs to enough of them to the job and keep the airways safe. It certainly would be a nice change.

I wouldn't want that kind of job. Thought about being a veterinarian but didn't want to go to school that many years

Air traffic controllers are under a lot of stress. Not my ideal job. I've considered a lot of different jobs during my 40+ years of working. Now I'm just glad I'm not working anymore. Have a great day.
