Taking a stand

Binalong is a small town in rural New South Wales. It has a population of around 500. A café owner there has imposed ‘tariffs’ on American drinks such as Coca-Cola and Jim Beam. The income from the tariffs will be matched by the owner and the funds used to support Ukraine. I know it will make very little difference in the long run but it’s still heart-warming to see such actions happening. The photo is of the quenda (bandicoot) that lives here at our house-sit. This one has no tail. Sometimes the males lose their tails when they fight with others. You can see from this photo that they don't really look like rats.

That's very kind of the cafe owner. Hope the peace talk works out.

I don't thing the world will ever be at peace. The rulers of our countries are too greedy for starters.

@JudyEv That's true. War, big and small, has never stopped in human history.

@kareng Ours are just possums - not opossums. There are two main types - ringtails and brushtails. Here is a brushtail.

It does I guess. I'm not keen on your opossums with their little pointed faces. We have possums but they're totally different.

It would be nice if more places made an effort for the Ukraine. A lot of countries say they support them, but when they ask for money, no other countries are wanting to hand it over. They talk a good talk, but keep the “wallet” firmly closed. They don’t look like rats, but if I found one in my home I would definitely be freaked out.

@JudyEv That’s probably true. It’s a good trait to have.

I know some people hate rodents and just can't help being freaked out. I find them quite endearing. Perhaps a farm upbringing helped me not to fear too many creatures.

About cat-size I guess but not big cat size. I've cropped the photo. This photo shows a half-grown one by my foot so he's not quite full-size yet.

@JudyEv I hope America's basic social structures don't shut down. People will get hurt for sure.

There will be some very strange times ahead I think and not just for America. It's all very sad and quite worrying.

It is the rear legs and snout that are different from a rat, I think. Rather cute really.

They can disappear in a flash but are also quite unafraid in a way.

The world is beyond redemption when it comes to having peace I still cannot reconcile when it comes to bandicoots. We just kill them when we find them.

No, it looks like a cute thing in the back with a possum face. Good for your little café owner! I’m sorry it’s come to this, but we have an idjit for a president (and you know you can’t spell idjit without DJT).

I wish the idiot in the White House and his girlfriend, musk, would stop screwing around with the economy and the payments promised to different countries. Tariffs, the way he's doing it, only hurt Americans and make other countries mad/upset.

@JudyEv He doesn't have time to do things the right way. If he did that, I'm pretty sure someone would have shot him by now.

I don't think such huge changes can be brought in so quickly without an enormous amount of damage being done.

@DaddyEvil So it's okay that he does things the wrong way? Good job we don't all think like that.

Tail or no tail, it's in the rodent family & if it's in a place I eat & cohabitate SORRY but that's where I draw the ____

It's not in the rodent family, despite its appearance. But that's okay. I can appreciate that you don't want it anywhere near you.

@2ndchances24 It's a marsupial so carries its young in an external pouch so that's one difference. The other main difference is that the teeth of rodents keep growing throughout their lifetime.

Some will say it is generous. I think others may just see it as virtue signalling
