A total meltdown

I just can't get over this meltdown, I mean I think it was .... uncalled for. One of the cashiers has a problem with men flirting with her, she's a little overweight but very pretty, this one guy comes in ( he's not handsome, just a guy that's overweight and usually in work clothes) and she hides from him. The manager had enough today when she came in the office to hide, she chewed her out. OMG! The only other people in there was me and the assistant manager, I walked out. This is a grown woman, she is married, however, she never hides from the young handsome men that's flirting. I walked outside and seen who the man was and he waved at me along with another guy in the work truck. I smiled and waved back. They are not creepy or disgusting, just regular people. The cashier stomped past me, extremely mad. I went back to the office and the manager was still mad, I couldn't help myself, me being me, I said " I must still be sexy, they waved and smiled at me." To anyone who is going to be a cashier..... People will flirt, people will talk sexual towards you, people will cuss you out, people will be rude, people will stare at you while waiting in line. People will be nice and kind. Your reaction is what matters, don't hide! If you don't like certain attention, let the person know, 9 out of 10 they'll back off. If they talk sexual stuff, simply say "that's inappropriate." If any of that fails, come to one of us managers or to security for God's sake!

As the saying goes, every job comes with its "things." Dealing with customers is of course, part of the job of a cashier, and customers are, of course, as diverse as ALL people are, and so you have to learn to deal with any and all situations.

@porwest exactly, when people accept that, then it's all good.

Indeed, called life, some people just friendly and mean no harm. The danger now is people not \being able to tell the difference. I get some anti social. I get people take advantage of anti social people but even if you anti social like me, you smart enough to remember who is good and who is bad.. There is no need to make a scene, unless in real time. After the fact, you the jerk. Like you said get help if you feel that way.

She is older and she doesn't want men her age flirting, just the young bucks.

@andriaperry That's perfectly understandable then. I would love younger women flirting with me too and older women. I think I just love women. In seriousness, professionalism is a thing and even I make sure to handle myself in a professional manner when doing work and I punk rock dude who is supposed to hate corporate things.

Flirting with cashiers seldom happens here in our place. Ignoring these flirtatious men will stop them to go farther, I guess.

Whoa, that whole situation sounds incredibly awkward! I can see why you walked out – that manager's reaction was way over the top. And you're right, flirting happens, but there are definitely ways to handle it without a full-blown meltdown. Your advice about setting boundaries is spot on.

There's all kinds you're right. She could smile and be business like and or tell him she is married, all kinds of ways to handle it rather than running away and acting like a child.

A lot of times, that doesn't always work. When you work customer service, you likely are going to get all types. It should've been taken seriesously because you don't think the guy wasn't creepy doesn't means that your co-work didn't think he was. He could be making her uncomfortable and she doesn't know how to handle it. If you want an employee to come to a manager, you need to be more compassionate when they have a problem.

Sometimes telling someone he/she is being inappropriate doesn't work. I am dealing with a friend of my husband's that I am going to have to cut off communication with very soon.
