Today also shuts down the alphabetical list of songs from 40 years ago, and in a big way! You’re probably surprised this didn’t make the top ten. Well, you know how it is.
Here’s the next song on the list of 1985 tunes.
You Belong to the City - Glenn Frey
On October 1, 1982, I became the envy of all my Eagles-loving friends when I kissed Glenn Frey’s cheek.
Got his autograph, too.
Sooo…why is the Eagles lover relegating this to the alphabetical list and not the top ten? Come on, folks, we all know that Don Henley’s solo career was easily the best of the Eagles members (and Joe Walsh is second…but to be fair, he had a longer stint as a solo artist). Not saying that Frey’s stuff was second-rate, but it seems like he was more interested in an acting career in the 80s than in making songs that’d be around in 40 years (like Henley’s “The Boys of Summer”).
This is a good example of what MTV did for music in the 80s. Miami Vice almost became a junior MTV, with people lining up to get their songs used in an episode. Oh, a lot of singers actually showed up, too: among the musicians who appeared on the show were Frankie Valli, Power Station (as themselves in a club scene), the late David Johansen (who’d also taken up acting in the 80s), Eartha Kitt, Phil Collins, and Frank Zappa. Oh, yeah, and Glenn Frey: an episode of the show was based on his song “Smuggler’s Blues.” That was the only episode of Miami Vice I ever watched.
From the guy who sued over the thought of “Take It to the Limit” being used in a Firestone tire commercial (“those songs are our children’s heritage,” he said) to actually appearing in AND SINGING his own song in a Pepsi commercial, it was an interesting time for Frey in the 80s. This is one of his highlights.

’80s track—perfectly tied to Miami Vice’s vibe. Totally agree that Henley’s solo career outshined the others, but Frey definitely had his moments. The MTV/Miami Vice connection really was huge back then. Fun read!

He definitely had great moments. “I Volunteer,” from his first solo album, is a favorite solo Eagles song.

@FourWalls Great choice! Frey had some underrated gems, and "I Volunteer" is one of them. His solo work may not have been as big as Henley’s, but it still had its highlights!

I bought a Casio keyboard with the paychecks I saved up for being a tutor in high school. One of the "instruments" on it was the sax . . . I loved playing the sax part of this song while I listened to it
! I remember this song well

Frey had some great sax work on his albums. I can understand that.

@FourWalls He did! I guess we hear a lot of sax in many 80s songs - so iconic!

My parents both smoked, so it was never cool to me (I have asthma), but from the aesthetic perspective I totally get what you mean. I mean, Bogart!!!!! (Even though it killed him….

Me lucky one with the kiss on the cheek! Needless to say, I didn’t really need the car to get back to Norfolk that night.

That sax solo is great! Almost forgot about this one.
Glen ventured into the "Brave New World" of a solo artist and gave us some terrific tunes! Can't forget "I've Got Mine" and "Part of Me, Part of You."

They used “Part of Me, Part of You” in Thelma and Louise which is the only thing (along with Charlie Sexton’s cover of John Hiatt’s “Tennessee Plates”) that made suffering through that movie tolerable.
