Fresh fish for dinner

A cousin gave us some catfish which Dale filleted and some herring. They were so yummy! I stewed some red potatoes and fried corn bread...only thing missing was sweet tea. Have you had herring? They're a very bony fish with lots of tiny bones. You have to fry them until they're almost burned so you won't choke on the bones. We have a yearly Herring Festival in the little town near us. Years ago, lots of people would fry herrings and cornbread outside for everyone to share. We sure enjoyed them and the catfish. No prob with my appetite, today, lol. How was your dinner today? What was the favorite thing you had?

Every once in a blue moon I will get a frozen one. You're right. They're mostly just okay.

@porwest I agree! Even the better brands have gone downhill in quality. Most don't even have any meat in them anymore also.

@kareng You're right about that. I try very hard to find meat and it's almost invisible. I only get a cheap brand or store brand one if I ever get one since I don't really think the name brand ones really offer any premium quality.

I had salmon with a topping of cumin and fake brown sugar. I have to say, it was awesome. One of my relatives was a big herring fan

I would love some good salmon, but I don't know how to cook it.

I have only had the pickled herring which I used to love. Not sure if I would now. As far as fresh fish, I was put off catfish as I had some once at a house but they had not cooked it right blah. I do miss the fish we used to catch and eat when I was a kid..cant recall what kind.

Some people don't like catfish, but like you said, it's probably not prepared well. Dale cooks the best catfish fillets. I wonder what that fish was you ate when you were little.

What are red beans? Is that the same as kidney beans?

Catfish AND herring? That's a haul. I'm jealous. We had the fam gang together so we just got a bunch of Chinese food.

@porwest They were really yummy, very fresh. We love Chinese, too, but there's not a buffet around here. The next best thing is a large Japanese Hibachi buffet.

@1creekgirl Chinese is #1 when it comes to ethnic fare for me. #2 is Mexican. Glad your fish was good, but then again, how could it not have been?

Not sure if it is the same type of fishes, I do have the other types of fishes we can eat on the whole after being deep fried.

I avoid such bony fish like the plague but that's just me. I'm glad you enjoyed them.
