You’ve heard that expression, haven’t you? “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.” (If you grew up with Erma Bombeck, you know her book The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank. ) That’s what I had this week, and it turned out to be a pretty darn miserable week. Well, not really, because I was truly blessed. But I did learn my lesson. I’ve mentioned that I have one of those small “portable” washing machines (small enough to fit in my bathtub). There’s nothing really wrong with it. However, for some reason (that “the grass is always greener” syndrome), I thought I’d like to have a “real” washing machine. So I went to Lowe’s and got a super nice LG 4.1 cubic foot machine. Monday I was home all day because they delivered it and the plumber came by to hook up an old line that had (past tense) a washer hookup attached to it but that I had removed with a plumbing job a few decades ago. Everything was hunky dory. (Not the David Bowie album. ) Then the rinse cycle started on the “test run” (that first time you run a washer to clean the tub and the lines out before you put clothes in it). Down the water went into the drain pipe…then back up it came. A few gallons of wiped-up water later, I figured the pipe was clogged (even though the plumber ran a snake through it). I remember what one of the job estimates I got said, and…well, for that kind of money I can do laundry in a laundromat for the rest of my life, or take a nice luxurious train ride to Seattle then down the Pacific coast. OR make a great down payment on a new car. No, out of my price range. Soooo…I called Lowe’s and explained that the brand spanking new machine wasn’t cut out for plumbing in a 75-year-old house. (To my pleasant surprise, the lady said that wasn’t the first time she’d heard that! ) To my even greater surprise, they took the washer back. NO restocking fee. NO pick-up fee. All of the money I spent on the washer, including the delivery, was refunded. Wow. Thank God! It’s Friday evening now, and I’m lounging after a nice soaking bath and a cup of peppermint hot chocolate (my Friday night treat in winter). Everything’s “back to normal.” A few years ago, when I mentioned the little washer, NJ Chic asked why I didn’t have a “real” washer. Well, now I know why. Meanwhile, as winter fades, the grass really IS greener. (Photo is the grass out front, celebrating spring.) Joe Walsh’s “All-Night Landry Mat Blues” for your dancing pleasure (and a laugh):

I saw a lot of green buds on the trees this morning, and the Bradford pear trees are in bloom all over the place (to the dismay of my allergies, but they’re gorgeous to look at).

Oh, my. I bet that was a mess for sure. But how wonderful they actually gave you a refund! I am sure all of that made you glad you had the little portable washer.

Yep. And, in hindsight (which is always 20/20), I see how HUGE that “real” washer is and I could NEVER hang all the clothes I could wash in it up to dry (I don’t have a dryer, save for a ceiling fan and a clothes rack ). Yes, everything turned out for the best.

@FourWalls When I moved here, I went from being used to having a clothesline to having to mostly use my dryer. My oldest son bought himself and his old mama both a really nice folding rack to dry things on. Dryers use so much power, what I can dry on the rack, I do. In nice weather I take it outside to my patio area, it’s private with a fence and that works well, too.

A washing machine that fits in the bath? I assume it’s a manual device and not connected to the electric? Sounds like it’s one step up from a poss tub! Great that you could get your money back!

@FourWalls That’s great! I’ve never seen anything like it? Does it spin dry too? I’m so used to full-size washer/dryers now, I hadn’t considered anything else. If it works for you then wash away.

@Orson_Kart — the spinner sings “Rubberband Man” while it spins. It’s pretty much the same as the spin cycle of a “regular” washer. It removes the excess water, but the clothes have to be hung up to fully dry.

I have a walk-in tub (definitely a step up!!!), and it has a “seat” built into it. The washer fits quite nicely on that seat, with the drain hanging down off the seat into the floor of the tub. The cord is safely behind the water flow and over the wall off the tub. This is what it looks like (even the color is the same). For something “small,” I can wash pretty much anything I have in it!

Oh, yes, they’re my go-to place. They’re the ones who installed my privacy fence two years ago. They do terrific work for a “big box store” (Lowe’s is one of the major hardware store chains in America).

Wow, what a rollercoaster with the washing machine! So glad Lowe's handled the return so smoothly. That peppermint hot chocolate sounds perfectly earned. Cheers to "back to normal" and greener grass!

Love the look of the greener grass, but my allergies don’t appreciate it. Part of spring.

@FourWalls Ugh, I hear you! Spring allergies are the worst. It's a trade-off, isn't it? Beautiful green grass but sneezing fits. Definitely part of the spring package, unfortunately.

Yes indeed. I’m so thankful. And I apologized to them for it, but the lady said it is rather common for appliances like washers and dishwashers to be returned because of the old plumbing/new appliances mismatch.

As soon as you said new washer I was wondering whether the old plumbing could handle it. Sorry you had to return it.

I’m sure they would have not been so gracious if I’d kept it for a couple of weeks THEN said “it wasn’t working.” I called a couple of hours after the delivery was made, which I would imagine provided legitimacy to the fact that there was an issue.

@FourWalls You're probably right. A lot of people order washers and dryers before they have a place for them so it might be weeks before they hook them up and discover a problem.

There are dang fools in Latvia who burn off old grass in the spring and sometimes endanger themselves and neighbors by starting fires they cannot put out.

We have that here as well. Some states do “controlled burns” to minimize dry fuel for fires, and others have burn bans during designated times.
