Do you think there's any chance that Donald Trump would reduce Social Security payments to older folks in the US?

When Donald Trump was campaigning for president of the Unite States in 2024, he repeatedly said he would not do anything to reduce Social Security benefits for older Americans who were already collecting said benefits.
But now I hear some people suggesting that Trump might "go after" Social Security benefits as a means of reducing the Debt and Deficit. Do you believe he would do such a thing?
What are your sources telling you? If you are an older American, or a disabled person, are you receiving any money from Social Security?

My husband and I both are. And so far, my benifits have gone up not down. Trump doesn't have direct control over social security, but it does need to go through a clean out. When a person passes a way, often times the benifits aren't stopped so we have money either going to their surviving family or no where. If this system isn't fixed, then it could eventually become a problem. But, there's been this ongoing fear mongoring, going back as far as I can remember that the U.S. will run out of money and social security will stop completely. And, so far, it hasn't and I don't think it will as long as people pay taxes.

That is weird. Not cleaning up system. We have to give annual survival certificate for getting even interest on our deposits with insurance company. I took dad for his this month. I was due to take him last month. Whether a person is alive or not needs to be proved by him signing in front of a person from the office. Dad cannot go upstairs, but the person comes down to the car to verify he is alive, and he is signing.
How come a 120 year old non existent person gets pension at your end...
We may also be having some nonsense like that in some of the systems, but I am not sure it is there in pensions.
In case of aunty, the bank manager personally talks to her on whatsapp.

@TheHorse Well, it's true that some people who have passed on are still recieving benifits. Because the system is flawed, and many deaths aren't reported. The fear-mongering, comes with the idea that the U.S. is so poor that we'll run out of money and the social security program will stop. Which is not true. As long as there are tax payers out there, then we'll always have money coming into the country.

He has continued to say that. I don't trust him and I worry consistently that he or Musk will do something to SS. He could get upset with some fascet or person and stop our payments. My daughter and I both get SS and would be in BIG trouble if he decided to stop our payments for some reason. They have already let many SS staff members go and are shutting down many offices. I am very afraid.

@TheHorse ..........I was diagnosed with major depression with panic attacks in the early 2000s. I have worked through horrible PTSD after leaving an abusive husband. I have extreme anxiety and social anxiety. Trump scares me big time. I have watched him grow through the years to what has become. I post about him to help myself not go stark raving mad.

@celticeagle Hey, he is there for just 5 years....or 4 years.....even if he did something like that, the new president elect after him, could reverse it, and Thump cannot remain president of the US forever like Brezhnev and Stalin...so this is short term blip...worst come worst served another 3 years 9 months. I know in your situation, that can seem a long time, but he has not stopped it as yet...right? Wait and watch and then bide time till you bid him goodbye forever.

He said he was going to stop the taxing of SS so hopefully, no reductions. I draw social security and a pension. Since I draw SS early on disability until I'm 66 and 10 months, it's taxable but they don't hold the taxes out. Only Medicare payments. My pension has to take out extra taxes. I retired on Disability early so drawing all but always worried the what ifs.

@TheHorse Severe psoriatic arthritis all through my body. That is my disability for retiring on a pension and my social security. I also have ankylosing spondylitis, severe narrowing in my 2,3 and 4th spine, need a right hip replacement and two total knee replacements. I have my third pacemaker for heart block. Other "stuff" too.

You mean to say he has enough without social security contributions? Are you kidding, that must be huge contribution to your 401k and other accounts....you mean to say he would let go of that from his account, his wife's account, his kids accounts....all those tax savings? How naive can you get...LOL

He cannot unilaterally do anything. If Congress goes along with it then they’ll suffer dearly next year.

I hope he doesn't get rid of it. My husband is just a year or two before he can receive it.
