Two story house and a shed fifty feet down property. Add in one mostly deaf person and you get dynamite. Wife tries to call hubby from bottom floor. Can't hear. Needs help from the shed. Same story. Daughter loves to be a detective. Hubby and daughter emailed back and forth. The results arrived today: doorbells that have a transmitter that plugs into the wall. We're hearing Avon Calling! and Happy Birthday chimes and the William Tell Overture- get on your pony and ride. I'm very loopy and working on antibiotic pills while hubby is install-playing with the doorbell gizmo. I just heard the William Tell Overture floating down the stairs. Fun times are here for sure.

@wolfgirl569 We had thought to hire an electrician to figure out why the house bell doesn't work but this is far cheaper.

I hope those work out well for you two. Pretty can't hear me when I'm in the back yard and she's in the house... I end up walking all the way back to the house and opening the door before she admits she can hear me calling for her. I know the walls of this house block out phones but there are at least two windows in every room and she should be able to hear through the glass... I think she doesn't want to hear me.

@sallypup You're welcome. I'm a fall hazard as well. Pretty tells me not to go outside unless I let her know I'm going. But once I'm outside, she doesn't hear me calling for help.

Thanks @DaddyEvil. Safety first for us- I am a fall hazard. The older we get the more we need to be able to reach each other if we're in need.

@snowy22315 Anything to avert a crisis. I love the wooden stairs but if I have a crisis going, I can get help from hubby or vise versa.

Those things can be a bit of a lifesaver. Same as chime extenders. Turns out we don't need those because our house is so small.

Oh my goodness. It seems you might be sorted now but you can get battery-operated hand-size walkie-talkies. Vince and I used these down the paddock when we were trying to get sprinklers sorted.

Little sound devices can be really helpful in those situations. When my first husband had ALS we had a bicycle horn he could stomp on for one reason and an array of four sounds also designed for a bike to communicate other things if I was not present.

@GardenGerty Did you have a reactive dog at that time? A bicycle horn sounds like fun. I just worry about our Rufus using that sound as an excuse to bark- he really is a terror when the phone rings.

@Tampa_girl7 Thanks. There is a doorbell here but somehow or other, its not wired correctly. It doesn't work. There is a piece on the kitchen wall that looks like a big chimes but who knows?

@Tampa_girl7 True. The wiring might have to be traced from the front porch to the kitchen. That sounds spendy. I can think of other things to spend money on like the roof.

Hopefully it will all work out and be helpful. Right now getting used to being all alone again I would probably jump out of my skin if I hear a voice or even a bell,

The doorbell will help you communicate? We live on an acreage. If Hubby would just keep his phone with him, I wouldn't have to run around shouting so much ??

@paigea Yes to communication- and less stair climbing for me. Hubby is pretty deaf.

@sallypup my Hubby is deaf and thinks his heating aids are for watching tv. I appreciate that do the tv doesn't have to be so loud. I'm not understanding how the doorbell will help you call to other areas.

Walkie talkies or an intercom system might be good for you.
