Big earthquake hits Thailand.

I gather a big earthquake (magnitude 7.7) hit Thailand yesterday. More than 150 people are dead, and several hundred are injured. I'll attach a news report that has striking video of a building under construction in Bankok collapsing to the ground during or after the quake. I have been in several small (4.5 ish) quakes here in the Bay Area, but I still lived in Iowa when the 1989 World Series quake hit here. What natural disasters do you worry about the most where you live? We worry about "the big one" here, but drought and wildfires are more common here than large earthquakes. Edit: Now I am reading that tens of thousand may be dead in neighboring Myanmar.

I had not heard about the quake yet. We had several visiting scientists at our lab from Thailand that I became good friends with. I hope they are okay.

Maybe I'll get some Thai food from my friend's place this evening and ask her if her family is safe.

Our biggest natural problem is the one we’re facing this weekend: severe weather. We had a quake here, centered in Illinois, on my birthday in 2008. It felt and sounded like a truck hit the side of the house. I heard about that earthquake, 7.7 centered in Myanmar, which is already in disarray because of political problems.

I know little about Myanmar. But one report referred to it as "war-torn."

@TheHorse — they had a coup a few years ago. Politically unstable.

@FourWalls At what point does a coup become a coup? A question many Americans are asking right now.

I had heard a little bit about that earthquake. We worry mostly about tornadoes

That's what I remember worrying about during my Iowa days.

I guess wildfires are what worry me most. Our house is on high ground so not too much fear of flooding (the main issue in this area).

@TheHorse We get a reasonable amount of rain, but not all the time.

Understood. Also understood that heat rises. But don't you get a lot of rain there?

Someone else wrote about the quake. It certainly sounds really bad. I guess a bushfire would be my biggest worry but in the city we should be pretty safe.

Yeah, I am not sure how well a bushfire would do in my suburban neighborhood.

@TheHorse Once a fire gets hold it's surprising how much power they have.

I read about this. Tragic. Have been in 2 quakes that registered around 5.0. I don't care to experience any stronger than that!

In California, we experience 4.2 'quakes fairly often.

@TheHorse Have you ever been in a big one?

I guess tornado or Gass fire would be most likely in central Alberta. There have only been a couple of tornados where people were killed.

I don't think of tornadoes when I think of Alberta.

@TheHorse there are tornadoes every year it's probably 40 years since a very destructive one.
