How far will you go for a prescription?

My sweet, long suffering father drove me to Tulsa this morning to pick up a prescription of mine. Yes, we drove 2 1/2 hours because it was the closest pharmacy that makes it. They said they can’t ship it because it has to remain at room temperature, and they can’t guarantee that. It seems weird. However, my dad wanted to check on my brother-in-law after his knee replacement surgery last week (they live 30 minutes further from the pharmacy). My BIL is doing incredibly well. After one week he’s off the walker, and using the cane. I just wish we didn’t have to use so much gas going once a month. *A picture of today’s visit with my 5 year old incorrigible niece, Annelyn, and sweet 13 year old niece, Amyra.

That is a good question since I do not have the transportation to travel a long distance from Lake Charles to get my prescriptions outside of maybe 20 miles.

Amyra has to be a positive influence on Annelyn, she always looks like she is trying to keep her well behaved. But honestly, Annelyn is adorable too, enough to pull off any mischief she could get into. I would be thankful that you can obtain the medication, your Dad is very generous to drive you, and he obviously weighs the fact that it is much more necessary for you to have the medication than to worry about the gas money. You come from good stock Amber.

Thank you, Julia, I appreciate that. Amyra is so funny. She told me, “Annelyn is so annoying at times, and it drives me nuts. But then I look at her, and she’s so cute I can’t be annoyed anymore!” Meanwhile, Annelyn is being taught how to read. The word is oxygen, and Amyra hints by saying it is something you breathe. “Fire,” Annelyn exclaims. (She watched a cartoon dragon the other day.)

@AmbiePam That is so cute, I can tell by her looks in photos that she loves her dearly and that Annelyn looks up to Amyra.

That was a lot of travl to get your medicine. Grateful that our pharmacy guy home delivers my medicines. Amyra looks like a big girl now.

I thought she was going to be really tall, but she’s 5’1, 105 pounds, and the doctor says she is done growing. But yes, she’s definitely grown.

@allknowing She hit puberty at ten. So did I. I quit growing at age 12, and my final height was 5’11. Of course, not all people are like that, especially males. She still may grow, but her birth mother was short too. And boy, does she look like her birth mother! I mean it’s like an older twin.

I did. Unfortunately, this is the most effective, affordable (even with the gas cost) kind, and I am DESPERATE.

That's so unacceptable that they won't ship that to you! That's a lot of time, effort, and expensive gas. How's your dad doing with the kidney stone? I hope it passed okay. That's good news your BIL is doing so well. I tell you what, those are two cute young ladies!

He said last night the pain went away. He’s still afraid to eat much because something “doesn’t feel right”, but he did well today. And thank you, I think they are adorable too.

What a sweet picture of your incredible nieces! Well, I can sympathize for sure. I have driven so many miles to get meds for my son. It’s not cheap and it’s certainly not convenient!! I’m sorry you and your Dad had to make the drive, but at least there was family to visit with at the other end, which is a definite perk!

Yes, it definitely is a perk. And I know of all people, you know what it’s like to drive all over the state for your loved one.

@AmbiePam I admit it can be very tiring. I remind myself that some people need medications and don’t even have a way to get them…I am no hero, that’s for sure. I do remind myself on a daily basis that we are supposed to “let all we do be done out of love” and you know where that comes from, as you practice that.

That is a long drive. It would seem like someone in your area would pick up ordering what you need-especially if long- going. Did you talk to your regular pharmacist?

@AmbiePam That will be nice. You need to talk with the head pharmacist and see if they can order it. Or the owner of the store if not a chain. That is great that your sister can pick up for you next month!

@kareng I’m a little confused on how the whole thing works. The pharmacy in Tulsa actually makes it IN their pharmacy. That means they must order each ingredient separately, and then combine them at the pharmacy, right? Does that mean my pharmacy is capable of it, and they just have to be willing to try it themselves? I’m sorry if that is a stupid question.

Yes. They had never heard of the medication before. None of the pharmacies I called had. How odd is that? Next month, thankfully, my sister is coming here for something already scheduled, so she can pick it up for me.

it happened to me once when my wife needed to get some medicine to cure her of a disease I didn't what disease it was at the time. No pharmacy was open on Sunday. I went quite far. That was a terrible day.

Sweet photo. Wow on so much of your post. That is one long way to go to get your meds but if they are what you need. then it is totally worth it. And wow about your BIL- knee replacement and a week later he is off the walker? Super man. As you know, I could be doing that surgery if I elected to.

I thought of you when I wrote that because I told you how badly my dad’s knee replacement went. I think he just got a bad surgeon. The pain medicine he prescribed also was one my dad told him had never worked on him. I know four other people who had a knee replacement, one in their 70s, and they all went well. You might not have any of those problems my dad had.

@AmbiePam Your poor Dad. One of my sisters also had a poor knee replacement- part of it had to do with infection from it. Shuddering.

Cute photos of your family. That's a long drive to the pharmacy. Shame they don't ship them out, or you have a closest pharmacy near you.

I guess I'd drive that far if that's where it was. I've never encountered that. It's good you could combine it with a visit with family. I would try to offset the gas expense with a mystery shop

I think I found a way to pay for a few months worth of gas. My sister had to round up judges and runners for the state competition of our church denomination. I’m a runner two hours Friday night, and a drama judge for two hours Saturday morning (in May). I’ll get paid $150 for both, together. That should cover quite a bit. Thank goodness.

Is it one of those scripts that they will not fill for more than one month at a time? Every three months would be a bit better, but some meds you cannot get dispensed that way.

No, they won’t refill more than one month, but several of my prescriptions are unfortunately like that due to insurance (not all though, thank goodness). The pharmacies around here simply don’t carry it. Insurance won’t pay for it at all. I’m just desperate so I’m giving it a try. If I don’t detect a difference in two months I’ll know it was a bust. But it’s worth a try. Please pray it works. I’ve got my hopes pretty high.

Love their smiles . Your dad has such a great caring nature - it shows in his actions for what he does for everyone. Good that you got your needed meds, but sheesh one would think the pharmacy would find a way to get it to you. Glad your BIL is having quite a speedy recovery - wow that surgery was just last week!

Living in a bigger city, I don’t have to travel for medicine. The worst thing I have to do is pay for my own fluoxetine because the brand that the VA gave me upset my stomach.

That’s great! I live in a suburb of Oklahoma City, but this medicine is just rare. Most of the pharmacies hadn’t even heard of it; even the other ones in Tulsa (I called to see if anyone had it cheaper). I asked my nurse friend, and she hadn’t either. She asked her sister in Denver, also a nurse, and she hadn’t heard of it.
