My birthday is this month, and for the past few years I’ve been celebrating with countdowns of “milestone” birthdays of songs (40, 50, 60, and recently, 70 years old). Since I’ll be 65 I’m also doing songs that are now as old as I am in another countdown. Here, though, we’re going back 60 years to 1965. Wait until you see the amazing music from that year! Let’s start here.
The Birds and the Bees - Jewel Akens
Hey, if you’re only going to have one hit, make it count! And wow, did this one ever count! While Jewel Akens (1933-2013) did tour pretty extensively and successfully, this was the only song he ever had in the top 40.
This song was my introduction to the phrases “the birds and the bees” and “the facts of life.” When my mom told me she was going to tell me about the birds and the bees, I thought she meant this song.
You can still hear this classic on the oldies stations.
The Birds and the Bees
Written by Barry Stuart
Recorded by Jewel Akens
Released as a single, 1965

Oh, I remember this one. It was popular back in the day, I was young but I do remember it.

That’s like me. I wasn’t listening to “rock and roll” then, but this was a hard song to escape.

Ok, different song here...when we went to live with our grandparents, there was a song on the local radio every morning at 8AM. Nat King Cole? ''You're The Cream In My Coffee''...it was a rather mindless silly song, but I remember that when it came on, the bus was 5 minutes away and I had to hurry. I used that song as a clock!!

Sometimes you need to hear it to know it. There’s one on the list that you probably know, but not by the name

Yes, I remember this one. It's another one my sister owned on record and played almost constantly when I was little.

It was the height of Beatlemania, so people were lucky to get one hit.

@FourWalls Oh yes, that could be it. The Beatles ruled.
