Work for yourself

April 2, 2025 1:14am CST
The freedom you have when working for yourself. Not having to report to anyone on a regular basis. I know there are many disadvantages to running your own business, but on balance I do prefer the perks. Obviously there is more pressure on yourself. Ensuring you make it pay, and relying on your own skill and direction to lead the way forward. Not having to justify your actions to anyone can be daunting, but if you’re a motivated individual and you have always shown you can lead the way, running your own business will enable you to actually be rewarded for the extra effort you always put in. I was always told at my regular job that I was superior at my job. I hit and exceeded targets regularly, but there is no reward for this in a large company structure. You’re just a number.

If you are working for yourself, there is no paid leave or sick pay either so you need to be making enough to cover any days when you can't work.

@Danielclark691 As long as you factor in all the negatives and positives, then you'll make a good decision.

You can always work full time and have a business on the side. That is what I always did. The extra money is nice.

Yes I could do. I don’t have time for a full time job though as I need the flexibility

If there is one thing I have always said, "If you are looking to work less, get a job. If you want to work MORE, start your own business." Most people have no idea the work and effort and hours it takes to successfully run a business.

@porwest yes so many businesses fail in the first year. I am not surprised by this, for the reasons you suggest

@Danielclark691 What I mean to say is that being self employed is not for everyone, and many people do it for the wrong reason and with the wrong idea in mind about what it takes. It's why so many businesses fail. The people who start them THOUGHT they'd have it easy, and quickly realized, that's not what being self employed is.

@Danielclark691 i agree. older generations can make a comparison but we can't. but, i hate when they address me with my first name, like we are good pals when we aren't.

I did that for a few years designing and executing landscaped gardens. But now I just reap the benefit of my hard work - I am now a home body

It sounds like you truly value independence and the ability to reap the rewards of your own efforts. Have you considered starting your own business, or are you currently working toward that goal?
