I shouldn't let it bother me, but...

I hate it when I occasionally break things at home. It's rare, I'm careful. But I didn't want to lose this--I have 2 ''very favorite'' coffee mugs, handmade just for me. This one was 24 years old, made by a dear friend. I treated it so carefully. Hand thrown pottery, it was something I treasured.
Maybe it was tired? Yesterday, right before all the storms hit, I poured my coffee in the mug. And it did THIS! Left a shell of it's former self. I was sad for a bit, but finally I tossed it. I do have one other thing this special friend made for me, a pottery vase, so it's all good. Even though I have a lot of mugs, this one was an old friend.
Do you have favorite mugs, too?

I had a favorite glass that broke, too. And I shattered several plates on the floor more times then I care to count.

It wasn't the mug so much as the memory of the person who made it. Thanks, Judy.

@MarieCoyle It's the memories attached to the items that make us upset.

Yes, it is. But I had it for way longer than most people would keep one, so I guess I was lucky.

I'm sorry about your favorite mug. I get sad when any of our kitchenware breaks. Some things are replaceable, but some definitely are not . . . your precious mug was a one of a kind. But you certainly gave it a good life.
I had a favorite little mug for work. Maybe it was more for expressos, but it was my "coffee" cup - had a little white puppy on the rim. Sadly it became a victim of the '94 earthquake

@MarieCoyle I hope your sister was ok. We were close to the epicenter - the damage to my parents' house was bad enough but others had it way worse. I think almost everything fell out of my parents' kitchen cabinets and broke on the floor.

Awe, I'm sorry. I well remember that earthquake, I flew out there not long after it happened, to see my sister. The damage was so heartbreaking.

For the most part when something breaks, I'm glad we have one less thing in the cupboard
At Christmas, I broke Hubby's favourite Christmas mug. I have searched online but can not replace it. It's a Rudolph mug, and matches a set of dishes, but the other mugs have different pictures. He was so disappointed! He glued it together and kept it, but it's not useable
Today I noticed that the last of his regular mugs has a chip. At least I can't be blamed
I'll leave that for him to replace.

The person that made this for me was very special to me and to my family, I think that's a big part of the reason I loved it so much.
Oh, that's sad. It sounds like he liked his Rudolph mug!

I have friends who are teachers. They get a LOT of mugs from students. They are constantly donating them somewhere.

Yes, I have two mugs that are over 50 years old. I bought them when I worked downtown. One has a pearlized fish on it. I'm a Pisces. I would hate for that one to be broken.

One of my other favorites I got when spending time with my Minnesota family in 1981. A pottery mug I watched being made, and was sent to me. My aunt wanted to get it for me because we both loved pottery. We were at the Renaissance festival...a wonderful memory, I drink out of that one often.

Thanks...life will go on. I was surprised to realize how long I had actually been using it. It's been through 7 moves, endless miles, and I can't even begin to guess how many cups of coffee I enjoyed from it. No one or no particular thing is forever. I still have a lot of cool mugs so I can't complain.

I do have a favorite. My mom had a half a cup shaped like half a cup, She broke it and she was sad about it for a while.
We got new plates, bowls, and salad plates about two years ago. My grandson has broken two of them so far. Helping his mom put dishes away and they were wet. It happens.

Knock on wood...we honestly don't hardly ever break anything, but of course everyone has things happen sometimes. Like I said, I will survive. I am just glad I still have something special the friend made for me.

It's just life. Nothing is really forever. I enjoyed it very much, but I do have others. I am just glad to still have a vase made by the same person.

I'm sorry, I know it was special to you.
I had a mug that Nathan made in elementary school and when the handle broke off, I use it now as a pen holder on my dresser.
