LifeVac airway clearance devices could save lives

There was an article on the news last night about anti-choking devices being installed in community venues in one of Perth’s northern suburbs.
A young father was unable to save his 22-month-old son from choking on a grape and the boy died in his arms. Determined to try to prevent such accidents, his research led him to the LifeVac airway clearance device, which is approved by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration. The LifeVac is a suction-based and quite simple device which simulates a strong cough-like reaction in the patient. It should be deployed when standard first aid measures have failed to remove airway blockages.
Choking is one of the six leading causes of death in the US and probably about the same in other countries. Children make up 40% of cases.
Interestingly, when we did our course on using a defibrillator, the instructor talked briefly about choking, saying the Heimlich manoeuvre was no longer recommended, which I found very strange, but moving on …
The boy’s father, Brian Bwoga, hopes that other councils will look at installing LifeVac packs in their community centres. There are many instances where a family tragedy leads a family member to campaign for change. This is another of them.

The NAME Heimlich maneuver is no longer recommended... It's still the same movement, though. They want to call it Five Abdominal Thrusts with the same gestures as the Heimlich Maneuver.

@JudyEv Apparently, Dr. Heimlich was into weird research and infected people with malaria, trying to cure other diseases by doing that without their consent. Even though his Heimlich maneuver was sound, the professionals don't want his name linked to the life-saving Heimlich maneuver.
Nope, it's just a name change and a rather stupid sounding one, at that.

@JudyEv That part is correct. At 96 years of age, not long before he passed away, he used the Heimlich maneuver to save a life.
One newspaper states that he didn't invent the Heimlich Maneuver but stole it from a colleague named Ed Patrick.

But yes, the Heimlich maneuver saved my 2 yr old sons life that I did for him when he was choking on a hard candy.
Still I guess these devices might be good.
Sorry to read of that poor child and Dad. RIP

That's good to hear that you were able to save your little boy. Everything has its risks I guess but in the absence of anything, at least the Heimlich manoeuvre might work, as it did in your case. That must have been really traumatic for you at the time.
