Our sad share of storm damage here

In the last several weeks, we have had endless storms, lots of tornado warnings, flood warnings and wind warnings. A few tornadoes touched down here and there that were very close but didn't hit here. Well, that's a good thing...storm damage around here for the most part amounted to some trees falling over from intense winds, and some flooding here and there. People reported roof damage, a few barns near the city were destroyed by various storms, and a lot of semi-trucks flipped over on nearby highways during these storms. Considering how high the winds have been here; we are very fortunate it not to have lost more lives or property.
Oddly, yesterday and today we have had off-and-on thunderstorms with big wind gusts. We had one about 7AM, with several big gusts and lots of thunder. I heard a huge noise, something hit the back of the house. Since the non-existent sun was up at that hour, I looked out to see--but couldn't see anything. I thought, well...I will wait until it stops raining, and go out there and look.
It died off storming about 9AM so I went out to see what the huge boom was all about. I have mentioned many times we have a lot of geese here, this is their home. Evidently, one of them got caught in a wind gust, and somehow got tossed against the back of my home, it was by the back door. It was deceased, and appeared that it had a broken neck from this.
I wasn't sure what to do as they have stressed to NOT touch the geese in any way due to bird flu. So, I called the wildlife people, and they came and got it. The man who came said he agreed, it appeared to be a broken neck from the landing it went though. I felt badly for the goose, but it appeared the death for the poor bird was instant. The fellow said he had to pick up several this week that had been in bad wind gusts and didn't survive, but I do wish it hadn't taken place, especially right by my door.

Yes, that's true. I know we have geese of all ages and generations here.

Aww, I would be horrified by such a thing happening here. You definitely did the right thing.

I´m so sorry. Sorry for the bird in the first place and then sorry that the bird could not be eaten. We had something like that last year when the bird flu started.

When I heard the big noise, I honestly thought it was a tree limb that had broken from somewhere and blew into the house. I hated it that it was wildlife.

It is sad when things like that happen to local wildlife.

The part of wildlife none of us want to see, unfortunately it does happen.

@MarieCoyle I've come across my fair share of birds on sidewalks from when they just drop out of the sky. I found out by running across them, florida has voltures.

I try to save what I can. I move turtles out of roadways, etc. It's just what we do to try to help.

Very true, he didn't suffer. I can't help but wish he could have either escaped the big wind, but no one can control the wind.

@MarieCoyle Agreed. Storms, floods, and other natural disasters claim numerous lives in rural areas. Urban losses are often countable, perhaps in single digits, but rural losses are incalculable.

I would gladly take part of these storms off your hands. We have had rain but no thunderstorms yet. Poor goose. But with a broken neck I think it was quick.

Yes, that’s what the wildlife fellow said, that it was a quick ending.
We have had a lot of thunderstorms lately, for sure.

Unfortunately things happen to wildlife that is out of anyone's control, but at least the bird didn't suffer.

That is very sad so sorry for the goose. I wonder if it would be possible for someone to build a shelter where the geese could got when the wind whipped up.

There is no way anyone could build enough places for all the geese in this area. There are literally thousands and they are all over the place.

I don't think anyone wants to find them, but it does happen.

Sadly, after spring storms it’s not unusual to find an upside down nest in the wet yard with either eggs or deceased babies. But it may be a little early for baby birds still, at least here.

The poor goose. I hope the weather we've been having isn't a preview of what it will be like this summer.
