Along with a look at the songs that are now 60 years old I’m celebrating my birthday with a month of songs that, like me, turn 65 this year. As I reiterate ever year with these countdowns (I do these every year in March-May to celebrate my birthday), it’s not designed to make you feel old (that’s what arthritis is for!
), but to show the timelessness of music. Here’s today’s song.
I’m Sorry - Brenda Lee
Hey, remember the 1985 list, when I used the Marshall Crenshaw song “I’m Sorry, But So Is Brenda Lee”? Well, here’s the song that inspired that one!
If you think she looks awfully young in that video, you’re right, she was. This song was recorded by a fifteen-year-old. What a voice, huh? Such a powerhouse of a vocal earned her the nickname “Little Miss Dynamite” (well, the voice and the fact that she is 4’9”, the only person I ever saw Little Jimmy Dickens look down on
[true story!! They were talking at the opening of the new Hall of Fame in 2001, and he was [barely] taller than she was!]).
Brenda is now 80. She’s been married for 62 years to the same man.
And, in 2023, she became the oldest person (79) to top the Billboard singles chart when the anniversary edition of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” went to #1.
Oh, and she’s in both the Rock and Roll AND Country Music Halls of Fame. She’s a true trailblazer!
I’m Sorry

One of my grandmother's really liked Brenda Lee. I had forgotten that...thanks for the memory.

As you say, what a voice! Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree is still popular here at that time of year.
There was a British singer called Helen Shapiro, who was around at the same time, who was also 15 when she sang - “Walking Back to Happiness”. She too had an amazing voice.

Teresa Brewer was young when she started her career as well, and she had a marvelous voice. I pulled up the Helen Shapiro video, and WOW! That’s a powerhouse vocalist! (Wikipedia says she’s still performing at 78.)

And still going strong! Or “Coming On Strong,” as the title of one of her songs says.

Brenda Lee is one of my favorite singers and have been during most of my life. I know most of her songs by heart.
