The Surveys Are In

Because of the terrible weather — two rounds of tornado warnings, followed by four days of near-record rainfall — the National Weather Service office has just completed the storm surveys for the tornado events. They say that we had eleven of them: five on March 30, and six on April 2. The eleventh one was announced earlier this afternoon. It hit “across the river,” in New Albany, Indiana. About half a mile from my brother’s house. My brother said he could feel the house shaking from his safe spot in the basement when it hit. The power poles along the road I take to get to his house were snapped. The National Weather Service rated it an EF1. I’m so thankful he didn’t have any damage. I’m also thankful the rivers are receding. The photo is one of our big drainage ditches/creeks, Beargrass Creek. You can see it’s back in its banks. I did temp work in the office building next to this creek, and it had made it up the bank to the parking lot during a rain event. I took this from the Home Depot yesterday, looking toward the office building. I’m thankful we’re having a calm spell in our weather, and I hope it stays this way!

That's a nice looking view of a water pond / ditch with the geese That would be my fishing spot right there for sure. "New Albany, Indiana" where is that ? I'm B-tween Terre Haute & Indianapolis, where you may see "Cloverdale"

New Albany is a suburb of Louisville, Kentucky. It’s right across the Ohio River from Louisville, along Interstate 64.

I loathe this time of year. I mean, I appreciate beautiful weather, but not when I get tornadoes with it.

We have already surpassed the normal annual number of tornadoes this year. I'm glad your brother's house wasn't hit and the water is going down! Keeping my fingers crossed that we don't have weekend #6 here. Jackson, MS is getting more storms late tomorrow afternoon, but my area should be in the clear. (At least that is what the weather peeps are telling us today.)

I couldn’t believe the number of tornado warnings they showed nationwide last week. It was unreal.

Thank you. I went by Southeast Christian Church yesterday and it looked like they had minor roof damage on a couple of buildings. I’ll take no fatalities or injuries from an EF3 any day.

I'm glad your brother didn't lose his house and the tornadoes missed all of us on myLot. (It's harder to worry about people I don't know, so I stick to the ones I do or have met here.) Our ditches/drainage culverts were running full this last week but the water level is below the top of the banks now. (The city kept cleaning the ditches here and clearing debris. I heard tractors and graders working through the storms at times.) Let's hope everything continues this way now.

@DaddyEvil — I know. You remember how I’d go to concerts out the wazoo back in the 2010s? I haven’t been to a show since 2018. Covid just helped solidify the fact that my concert going days are over.

I understand. I worry about the myLotters in the paths of these things. When I heard about the nightclub roof collapse my first thought was, “Do we have any myLotters there?”

@FourWalls Most myLotters don't go to night clubs anymore... Most of us are getting slightly older so we don't go out as much as we did when we were younger.

I drove by the current VA hospital exit today. I saw the flooding, but I don’t believe it. That exit is at least a quarter of a mile from the bank of the river. And it’s under water .

Are the black & white spots ducks? And were they the ones who plugged in those teeny tiny pine tree seedlings on the bank?

Always great to see “the calm after the storm,” especially when you’re discussing severe weather.

It’s been a long time since we had that many. Even with the Henryville tornado in 2012 we didn’t have a lot….just one. REALLY bad one.

We’re getting more right now. You know how hurricane season is? That’s how severe weather season can be here. Thankfully, these are hit then leave, they won’t stick around for a week like the flooding rain did.

That's a whole lot of tornadoes. How long does tornado season last?

It depends on what part of the country you’re in. Our season usually winds down in mid-May, with the “second season” in the fall. In Alabama, they have two seasons, tornado (November-May) and hurricane (June-November). Usually, the threat is confined to the time of year where you have two diverse, converging air masses (cold and warm & humid) fighting it out along a front. The weather is more stable in the summer (hot and humid) and winter (cold and miserable), so those are the least likely times for tornadoes here. But we have had them in December (2021). I remember the New Year’s football bowl games being interrupted for tornado warnings one year.
