My Eyes are Burning

So about two hours ago a fireman knocked on my door to tell me to evacuate. I’m just now back in my apartment. Someone had a fire in my building, one breezeway over. My eyes are just burning something awful. Everything smells like smoke, and I’m not sure how long the tickle in my throat is going to last. Everyone is pretty annoyed at the lady who left her hot plate on and took a nap. I know they’ve displaced 8 people so far. I guess some major construction will be going on soon. Thankfully, the lady had rental insurance. I have my air conditioner going with fans, but goodness, my eyes won’t quit burning. Need some drops in excess!

Oh, my....I am sorry there was a fire, but so thankful it wasn't any closer to you than it was. If the smell is really getting to you, maybe you can go over to your Dad's? You have enough health problems without breathing in all that smoke.
In thinking about this post, I have to ask--you said a lady left her hot plate on? Does she not have a stove, or is she just fond of the hot plate? I was thinking if her stove is broken and she can't use it, maybe she resorted to a hot plate?
If I take a nap the stove is never on. I do nap sometimes when food is in the crockpot, but hey...if we can leave them on and leave the house, it should be ok to take a nap while it's doing it's thing!!

They’re saying it was just a hot plate, but it sure spread to other apartments quickly. Now that I’ve had my air conditioner on for hours, and I periodically wet my whole face, I feel a lot better. I found a bunch of eye drops, and they have helped.

If you have some Benadryl, you might take one or two tablets. That should help your eyes to stop streaming from the smoke.
I'm really sorry that happened to you. I hope you feel better soon.

Sorry that happened and glad it was not worse, What a dumb head that lady who turns on their hot plate and takes a nap. I know I have put something to heat up in my toaster oven and laid down to read but my oven dings off my itself and tells me the food is ready.

Oh wow, that's scary. I remember when my nephew lived in an apartment in Ohio, the lady who lived across the hall fell asleep while cooking. The fire was bad and she perished. The rest of the building was awoken by the fire alarm and maybe the smoke as well Glad this happened during the day .

I’m so sorry for you and for the displaced individuals. I’m sure the lady didn’t intentionally start that fire, even though I can understand they’re upset over being displaced and having a major disruption of their lives like that.
Hope your eyes recover quickly.

I hope that you can clear that bad air out of your unit.
That will go a long way in helping with your eyes and breathing, if that is an issue.
If you do not have any eye drops, try just a dropper and some slightly cooled water, that may feel refreshing and wash them out.
I am so thankful that you were not harmed.

Gosh that sounds awful and I hope the smoke dissipates soon. Not good for you to be breathing in all that smoke.
How crazy for that lady to take a nap while her hot plate was on. She's lucky she didn't set her whole apartment on fire and burn herself up

@AmbiePam what a shame that others have lost their apartments due to her negligence. I hope you don't have to move

I'm glad your apartment wasn't involved with the fire. You have to be so careful when using things like a hot plate.

I'm really sorry to hear about the fire in your building. That must have been a terrifying experience! It's good to know that everyone is okay and that the lady has rental insurance to help with the aftermath. I hope your eyes feel better soon—smoke exposure can really take a toll. It’s always frustrating when something like this happens due to carelessness. Stay safe, and make sure to take care of yourself during the cleanup and recovery process!
