Art Festival

Last Saturday, after we had returned from Disney, surveyed the damage from an unexpected hailstorm that hit the area, and did a quick/brief cleanup of debris, we decided to head out to an arts festival presented by a local college. Following the terrible weather on Friday (that we thankfully missed because we were out of town at Disney World), the weather on Saturday was absolutely gorgeous and perfect: clear, sunny skies, low humidity, and just cool enough out to need a hoodie/sweatshirt to start the day. It was just the perfect day to be outside. The arts festival, which consistently ranks as one of the tops in the nation, did not disappoint. And although there were dozens of tents/booths that were damaged in the previous night's hailstorm, for the most part all the artists and vendors had recovered nicely and were in good spirits. And it looked like the crowd was too, as people were buying up art left and right. I always make it a point to buy at least one thing every time I go to an art festival. It's my way of supporting the arts. This year, in honor of the University of Florida mens basketball team winning the national championship, I was hoping to find some beautiful Gator artwork that I could take home and proudly display. As I walked around the hundreds of booths, I saw so much beautiful art, and many pieces that I was definitely interested in buying. But no luck on finding that perfect Gator piece that I so desired. But my luck soon changed. Right as we were about to leave, out of the corner of my eye I spotted what I had been looking for! As soon as I laid eyes on it, I knew I had to have it, and it was like it was calling my name: "Jeff, buy me, take me home, display me proudly!" In the photo, you can see the piece of artwork I purchased. It's a wood carving of the logo of the University of Florida, and I have it displayed in my home office on the wall facing my desk, so that I can admire it every time I sit at my computer. I love art, and I love art festivals. How about you? Do you ever attend art festivals, galleries, or museums, and do you support the arts, especially in your local community?

That is a really lovely piece. We have a lot of Vince's photos displayed so it's a bit hard to make room for too much more. I do try to buy something if I go festivals of this sort.

We're starting to get to this point as well, where our walls are covered with artwork. I do have cathedral ceilings in my living room, so I do have wall space that stretches up very high, so I do still have some room for artwork there, but I would need a ladder to hang pieces over what we've already got displayed. I'm sure you have some amazing photos from Vince displayed throughout your home!

@JudyEv We say the same thing, and we never do either! Every once in a while when we get a new art piece we may move a few things around, but for the most part we don’t touch things once we’ve put them ip for display

@moffittjc We always said we'd switch photos/prints around from time to time but we rarely do.

I would expect nothing less than for you to have something of LSU displayed in your home! lol I watched the gymnastics meet the other night to cheer on my Gators. However, they did horrible and were not one of the teams to make it to the finals. I saw yesterday that LSU also did not move on. What a sad day in the gymnastics world that our two teams did not make it to the finals.

@moffittjc It was and I think a lot of them were "off" or the judges were being very particular. Notice that no team got into the 198.xx score range! And several were there for at least half of the regular season.

@kareng My daughter was telling me the same thing. The judges were being unreasonably tough on the teams.

Great that you didn't have to leave empty-handed and disappointed. It is a beautiful looking piece.

I'm very selective in what I collect, but I do like to support the arts, especially in our local community. But you're right, if you end up collecting too much, it makes for quite a bit of stuff that will eventually need to be cleaned/dusted.

That's a great piece, Jeff. I would love to go back to the Art Museum; but someone would have to push me in a wheelchair because I can't walk very far at all.

Do you have one of those mobility scooters, or carts, or whatever they are called? The ones that run on batteries.

Cool, and scary looking beast. Yes, I enjoy arts and also craft festivals. The trouble is most of them are held during the summer when it is like a million degrees! I hate to be hot.

It is impossible to do anything outdoors in the summer here in Florida, due to the heat, humidity and constant threat of thunderstorms. That's why this month there seems to be an art or craft festival every weekend, given the decent weather we have right now. We also have a big arts festival In November, and a huge crafts festival in December, both during months when it finally cools off enough to be outdoors! Do you usually buy something when you go to arts or crafts festivals?

That's so cool. I love art festivals, but I haven't been to one in a long time. I love art museums too. There is supposed to be a music festival next Saturday that has art. But I doubt it will happen because it's supposed to rain Saturday.
