My drive through Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park today was unremarkable. Oh, I saw a bear, but hey, that’s what everybody goes to Cades Cove for in the first place. I saw him moving in the woods to my right on the “outbound” part of the loop. (For those who aren’t familiar [I talk about it like it’s the most visited national park in America…oh, wait, it is ], Cades Cove is a one-way, eleven-mile loop road. About halfway through, there’s a “break,” with restrooms and a store that sells flour that’s ground at the mill in the Cove! Once you get past that, you’re “on the way out.”) There was a pull-off almost immediately after I saw him, so I pulled off! I grabbed my binoculars and made sure it was a bear. He was happily foraging for a while, then he noticed that a crowd had gathered on the road. So he ran across the road to the field, where he slowed down and continued nibbling on things and entertaining his audience. That was a blast. Of course, the rest of the drive was wonderful, too. The mountains are coming to life with green, and it was simply a stunning drive. The bear was a bonus. And there’s a picture for you to show you exactly WHAT he does in the woods.

One of these days bears are going to start a movement against people taking their pictures in the woods... It's an invasion of their privacy, and I'm sure the bears would all agree. After all, he tried to run away from the camera. The poor bear is lucky you didn't catch him doing anything else in the woods!

They have these signs in the restrooms that have a cartoon bear covering itself going, “Do you MIND???” and explaining that one needs to stay a good 50 yards or more from them. The elk probably have the same problem over in the North Carolina entrance side. I went to Cherokee for a day trip a few years ago and came back, to discover the “rush hour” elk invasion at the welcome center.

@FourWalls Poor bear and elk! You probably took pictures of them using the bathroom and just didn't want to shock the poor people on myLot by showing those!

He may have done that before he came out to entertain the crowd.

When I was eight years old, I went with a church group to Yellowstone. I remember we were walking, and suddenly the adult, one of the leaders of the group became very animated and his voice rose, directing us to look at this spectacular animal. Off, maybe fifty feet away from us, was an adult moose wandering through the area. The adult was so excited. We all just looked out at this huge animal as if nothing had happened, not realizing what a monumental experience we were being allowed by nature.

I think we, as children, get used to seeing animals in a “wild” setting at the zoo, so seeing one in a REAL wild setting doesn’t faze us.

Sighting that bear definitely was a bonus. I got to handfeed a woylie on our trip which was a highlight too. I'll write about it soon.

Can’t wait to hear about it!! They’re cute (woylies) and probably won’t take your arm off the way a bear would if you tried to hand feed it.

They fine you if you get too close to the bears. Assuming you actually survive getting too close….

I've been there before, it was a nice place to travel through. I enjoy adventures that involve nature. I can't recall if I witnessed bears when I went through there or not.

He didn’t. He scampered across the road like he didn’t want to be hit by a car (even though everyone was stopped to look at him), then slowed down once he made it to the other side of the road like he didn’t have a care in the world. He didn’t bother us, and we hopefully didn’t bother him.
