An emu in the garden

I guess you could call this emu ‘folk art’. The owner of our old family farm made it from barbed wire and bits and pieces of machinery. It’s very well done and to scale. The barbed wire is ideal for the plumage and he’s even fashioned the small wings that emus have. They can’t fly but there are vestiges of wings. This one has even laid a couple of eggs.
I’ve always been surprised at how often emus get mentioned in American posts. They are a pest here in some areas and were so bad many years ago that the army were brought in to help cull their numbers. However, from all accounts the army weren’t very good shots and made little impression on the numbers. Maybe they needed AK47s.
Another time I’ll put up more photos of the quirky things that were in the garden.

I lived across the street from an emu farm. They are healthy to eat, but a heck of a lot of people simply have them, and not for food. Emu burgers are so good, but a lot of people are squeamish about eating them.
I love the art; it’s fantastic!

That sculpture is very cool.
I remember once watching an episode of American Pickers and Mike and Frank were hiding in a barn because they were afraid of an emu on the property. When they finally "escaped" with what they had picked, the emu, a boar, and a couple of other animals "chased" them to the fence, and the owner was busting up laughing, explaining to Mike and Frank after that they were all pets and just wanted treats!

We had a pet emu and she loved grapes. She was harmless too but quite imposing when she came up close.

That is so cool! I think our introduction — at least MY introduction — to the emu was Rod Hull and his puppet Emu.
(The puppet was a pain in the butt, too, so I don’t know why we’d think they’re cute.

That is an interesting Emu art. One thing I have heard about Emu's, is Emu Oil. It is supposed to be good in helping scars fade.
