i wanted to have my boys circumcised at birth but the pediatrician informed us that that's not standard procedure anymore because of the higher risks of infection. so when should little boys have them? or is it unnecessary anymore?

Of course they can do without circumcision -- they have successfully since the start of humanity. Perhaps this will enlighten:

Back in 1971, when my son was born, it was done before we left the hospital. They said it was easier and less painful when the baby was so young, and the procedure was said to be more healthy since it would be easier to keep clean. I never knew of some of the other reasons for circumcision other than religious customs.

i remember, when my three younger brothers were born, they had theirs when they were bron, too. and for the same reasons you stated also. that's why, i was surprised when i had my two boys (1996 & 1997, the pediatrician refused to do the procedure because of the higher risk of infection. when i asked hm when was the right time, he said to wait for my boys to ask for it. whew!
