Could a medication stop obesity?

United States

Some say obesity is caused by depression. Could taking medications that help with depression, anxiety, ADHD, ect... help to stop the plague of obesity in the U.S.? What do you think?

depression is not the only cause for obesity. there are many causes that mixed together lead to obesity. foar a person not to be obese anymore she should consult a nutritionist to find out what causes her urge to eat, and to get a personalized diet and if the depression is one of the causes she should also consult a psichyatrist. but this is for one person. for an entire country is more difficult to find a cure fit for all of them. they would better find something to prevent obesity because you know it is better to prevent than to cure

maybe in some cases it could help but others people just blame it on that and maybe they are not depressed at all but have the urge to eat. some many people and so many different reasons.

In Some cases Antidepressants may help, but in others they would hurt. Many people experiences Weight Gain on those meds. Obesity is more of a plague based on dietry and lack of exercise habits, which can also contribute to depression. I think putting activity in your lifestyle is the best way, find a sport that is fun to you or walk for an hour a day. - DNatureofDTRain

I'm sorry but all I think is needed to stop obesity is for people to eat less and exercise more. It's surely that simple.

Adderall - Adderall
Sure, if everyone were on Adderall, the world would be a better place. No one would be overweight, no one would be depressed. Everyone would be ever so kind and friendly, and we wouldn't have any lazy people in the world. We would all live in complete harmony. :0)

Eating slowly at the dinner table rather than bolting your food down will keep you slim and make dining a far more enjoyable experience, a new study has found.

The first scientific proof that eating slowly means eating less, showed that women took in about 70 fewer calories when they were told to take their time eating pasta, compared to when they ate the same meal as quickly as possible.

There are many other causes of obesity, depression is only one possibility/factor. Besides, I've actually heard of people gaining weight while on anti depressants, so it might not be wise.

I don't think that depression is the single cause for obesity and I don't think taking antidepressants would help - in most cases they make people put on weight. I think a good way to start would be to find out the root cause of someone's overeating via counselling perhaps, and take it from there.

it is quite right that obesity is caused by depression, and the saddest part is that the medication used for treating depression further increases water retention in the body causing your obesity problem to escalate. so definitely these medicines are not a solution to curing obesity. the way out is only good exercise and well planned diet

Yes some obesity is cause by depression and I belive that if you could control the depression then It should help with the weight problem. But there are also other causes of obesity, like thyroid problems and those could also be treated with the proper medical attention. So yes I think we could curb the obesity problem with the right medical diagnosis. On the other hand by doing that we become a nation that is also a bunch of pill poppers.

Obesity is caused by many factors...such as Being seriously overweight is not caused by one single factor. There are a number of things that may interact and contribute to one becoming morbidly obese. Genetics Culture Physical inactivity Emotional or psychological factors Gender Age High-fat / High Calorie diet Medical problems

I've never known anyone to have anything but weight gain on antidepressants if on it for very long. In my case it was 40 lbs. Most people say that exercise and diet do not help either. They are saying it has something to do with a liver enzyme that stops working when you take these meds.
