Since there has been Pc's they used to say to turn your computer off when you weren't using it, but now it is better to plug it into a surge protector and leave it on if you are going to use it everyday. I leave mine on at home all the time unless it is storming outside really bad. They say that turning it off and on a lot is harder on the computer. One thing that I know it that electrical surges up and down loosen the chips inside the machine some and then it doesn't work correctly. I took a couple classes for troubleshooting pc's and when you have intermittent problems you should reseat you chips and cards in the computer 1st before replacing anything.

you're not unto saving electricity then, lol! i think if you really use it everytime of the day or you're waiting for a very important emails, it's ok not to turn it off. I'm thinking now if what really matters most, the electric bill or the chips on the computer, lol!

We never turn off our PC. First off, they do not consume much energy while not being used. Someone is on a PC pretty much all day in our house. It is not good to be constantly turning on and off your PC, it is not good for the computer.

you think so? i hope we can do that in the philippines too:) we can't keep our computers on all day because our temperature here is very high and that could cause the computer to overheat sometimes unless we use aircon 24 hours a day and that wouldn't be necessary in U.S:)

I wish that wouldn't be necessary. I live in Louisiana and we run the air conditioning almost all year round because it is so warm. If we didn't run the a/c we wouldn't be able to live in our homes, let alone have our pc's on.

Yes it is trust me! People here use a lot of electricity for cooking while in the Philippines we use profaine to lessen electricity. Here they run a lot of electricity in the kitchen? do we do this? the answer is no! their oven is run by electricity, microwave, oven toaster, some have dish washer, some use electricity for barbeque, rice cooker, deep fryer all of them are run by electricity. Their refregerator here are bigger and have a bigger freezer compared to us. In fact I've never seen this type of refrigerator in my entire stay in the Philippines. It's hard to explain, they are just more high tech to us! that's it! I am guessing it's because electricity is way cheaper here. All things in the Philippines are cheap except for electricity I think. We can buy a brand new refregerator for only $100 and you can't find it here. They also have washing machine, and their washing machine is different, its a lot bigger and heavy duty. Most of the people here do their laundry by the washer. In the Philippines? we don't very often? why? because of electricity.

You are quite right about the older computers. It would have caused unneceassary wear on the hardware to leave it running around the clock. A modern computer will suffer no ill effects from being permanently on, and would probably undergo more wear and tear by being booted up several times a day.

I do not turn off my PC every day. It runs threw the night for my virus scans and whatever upgrades are downloaded from Microsoft. I do shut it down once every other day or so.

I do a little of both. Some of my computers are turned off when not in use, others are kept on. My desktops are on 24/7. My laptops are turned off unless they are being used.

I'm not american and I've got another pc (not this one where I'm typing right now) that stays turned on as long as it can... I just reboot it when it starts showing error messages or becomes too low due to the lack of free memory.
I don't turn it off because I'm always uploading/downloading something from the net.

in my opinion i think its more convenient for them to have it on all the while so that when they will use it they dont have to turn it on again. so far, from my experience from work they just leave it on to avoid the hassle of the pc booting up specially if they have routers.

I am not an american but I do leave my computer on all the time, basically because I see no reason to switch it off.
I reboot my computer at least once a week to free up RAM, because Windows will tend to allocate a certain amount of RAM for a program and then refuse to release it. Apart from this it remains connected 24 hours a day.
