Princesses. Why do girls want to be one?

Why do some girls like to refer to themselves as princesses? I'm curious as to the thought process on this. Is it wholly a romantic fantasy like sleeping beauty or cinderella. My first thought, when I hear girls call themselves princesses, is that they think they are above others, that they are "special". I believe everyone is special but I don't think it is admirable to use titles to tell people that you are. The definition of a princess is "one who is a hereditary ruler". Meaning one who rules or is in line to rule based on heritage and not on merit. Any others agree or have a different reasoning? I welcome your input.

I think many do expect royal treatment or at least want it. I say treat everyone with respect but don't acknowledge or condone people when they express feelings of superiority.

When I was a little girl my dad always told me that I was a princess. So I guess that if you grow up with people telling you that you are a princess then you are going to believe that you really are.

I agree about that but it doesn't explain why the use of the label "princess".

My SIL wants her future daughter to be a "little princess". I said what if she doesn't want to be? I don't mind girls who like dressing up and being princesses, but to force any girl into it is wrong imo.

Well, I just think it's kind of sweet when someone cares about me and calls me princess. I never think of myself as one, or even want to be one, but it shows what the other person thinks of me, and I think it's sweet.

princess! - princess!
I don't think that they are thinking they are better then everyone. I think that they may just be thinking that as a woman they want to be treated as a princess. I always say that I treat my husband like a king, therefore I want to be treated like his queen. We don't think we are better then anyone. It's just a way of saying we treat each other as royalty. I think there is nothing wrong with this at all. I think it is just a cute way for a girl or woman to say that is how they would like to be treated. No harm meant.
