I live in Texas too and remember a tongue-in-cheek statement from someone...If you have to shoot someone, you'd better make sure he is inside your house and not outside...something to do with it having to be on your property or you couldn't say it was self-defense!

Just as long as they are in your house when you shot them. If you shot them and they are outside your house you better drag them it.

I don't know what the laws are here in the united states. It seems like you should be able to defend yourself.

Well, this is starting to sound like Redneck territory - not that there's anythng wrong with that.
But the way the "law" is pretty much across the Western world now, it's pretty clear cut that you have to look after yourself because the legal system is quite clearly there to look after the interests of the offender.
So there's really no choice in the matter - if you want to look after your own interests and someone of ill intent invades your property, then you have no option but to incapacitate them - and because the "law" turns YOU into the offender if you actually DO take action to protect your own interests, then you have to make sure that you incapacitate the intruder PERMANENTLY. Sounds severe, but that's the uncomfortable reality.
Goodness only knows what it will be like if what little veneer of law and order we still have left is finally peeled away and shredded by unexpected international circumstances.
