THis year we are kind of low on funds... so I decided to make ornaments for our family. The problem with this is that my husbands family are loaded. So I feel like they are going to look down on what we are getting them. So do you have any ideas on what we should do? I am taking my daughter to go see santa... do you all think that a pic of her would be ok? Or should I just not worry about and ignore it?

Do you have any experience with your hubbies family from previous Christmas's? It is pretty hard if you do not know the famly very well. However, just do the best you can within your means and leave it at that. However, if making gift baskets might be your thing, you can usually get health and beauty aids cheap or free with coupons and rebates. I try to collect all the freebies I can, then construct gift baskets (doesn't have to be in an actual basket). Here I get a lot from Rite-aid and Cvs mostly although other deals do come around from other stores. I subscribe to a website that the deals are chatted about. It is only $4 for 3 months so anyone can afford to try it. I just absolutely positively wouldn't be without it. The name of the website is refundcents but if you decide to visit, it would be much appreciated if you went through my affiliate link. Many, many things can be seen there without the subscription but the parts I like best are password protected. I am having a slow week for deals here but many places in the U.S. are having a bonanza.

I just wanted to say thank you to all of you who have answered my question... I know it seems that I am trying to hard because I am. I know that you all probably think I am crazy for acting like this. But to be honest with you all they do not like me that much... not sure if it was something I did... but that is the fact. We are driving there... which is an 17 hour drive to suprise them. That is what I am flipping out over gifts. I just wish it was simple. But I just have issues with it all. But you all have made it seem OK for me to keep on trucking with the ornaments. I have 24 done and 10 more to go! I did take my kif to see santa but the pic turned out like poop. So I just I will do my best with it all! I will keep you all post tho! Thanks agian!

I thought I should add that your plan with making ornaments or giving a picture of your daughter is just fine. I just wanted to share what I am doing in case you are interested. You probably won't have enough time to get too many gifts done the freebie way anyhow. Of course, I always figure if I save some money from one area of my budget, I can always use it somewhere else.

I know how you feel. I have family that has lots of money and I always feel like my gift is cheap. But I am always told that it is the thought that counts. Do you have a dollar store near you? I have found some really nice things there. You could probably find a nice frame to put your daughters picture in. I think that would be a wonderful gift.

I dont celebrate Christmas but I will say this. Just because his family is loaded does not mean they will look down on you. If they know you are short on funds, they should appreciate your efforts! If they don't, what does it say about them?

Photos are always loved especially of grandchildren. Buy a nice frame or even one from the dollar store some are nice frames and frame the photo you give them. Why not make make them cookies, candies and put in a nice christmas box, or buy a box of candy. My nephews requested Peanut Butter Fudge and a Cherry Cheesecake from me. I will probably make and bake cookies and candies for everyone this year since I have to make a mess to do two things anyway. Good luck and Merry Christmas

I think that the ornament and/or picture of your daughter should do just fine. They need to be understanding of your financial situation. My folks would be thrilled to get such gifts, especially knowing that we were being responsible with our finances by refraining from spending too much money.

I think the picture of your daughter with santa would be a nice gift. But if you wanted to add something to go with it you could make suar cookies and have your daughter help you cut out the shapes and put sprinkles and iceing on it. We do this ever year for our family and they love it.

It sounds to me like the gifts you are making for everyone will be much more special than anything that could be purchased. If your in-laws don't realize that, then it's there loss. They sound like wonderful gifts to me.

I think when you make a gift for someone your spend the time on it that is special and it comes from the heart. Alot of people like that. so go for it. and get the picture of your daughter and make a frame. The best part about it is you can have fun doing it.

I would think, loaded or not, that they would appreciate the personal effort you put into making them anything they can treasure. I wouldn't worry about anything at all... and yes, a pic of your daughter will be well-received, I'm sure. Bless you... have a great Christmas!

I would make something out of food. Like the cookie mixes or bread mixes. Everyone likes food and won't turn it down!

they should appriciate the effort you are making, its not how much you spend its the thought. i do see what you mean, its that feeling like you have let them down as they were expecting more. photos of the kids are priceless and wuld be well recieved im sure!

I found some reasonably priced but nice stuff here http://zgallerie.com/ Also most magazines have their Dec. issue gifts that are very very reasonable. Like Great gifts under $25. The best way to look at them is go to a book store where you can take a notebook and write your ideas down - then you don't have to buy the magazine. Also have you considered making presents? You can look up things on the internet that you can make at pretty reasonable prices. Soap... satchets... bath teas, etc. Scrapbooks are gifts from the heart that don't cost a whole lot to make. Maybe browse crafts stores or even $1 stores for stuff you can buy cheap and make better.

I agree that it'd be a great idea to make ornaments, after all, it shows that you put in a lot of effort. Maybe you could look around on the internet and make sure each one is as unique as possible? And of course they'd enjoy the picture of your daughter!

Sounds like someone needs a lesson on the concept of a gift. Stick to your budget and don't let the snobbery (yes, that's what it is) of your inlaws ruin your holiday. In giving it really is the thought that counts and anyone who looks down on a gift because of its perceived value needs to learn some manners.

Another pic of Tartan - Another pic of one of our cats.
I've heard some real horror stories of people who spent lots of time on a gift and the recipient wasn't thankful. So my philosophy is to give what I can and not worry about what people think.

If they're loaded, yes, they're probably going to look down on you- or not. They could just not care; I spent alot of time thinking that my realitives wer ealways looking down on me, and in the long run, it turns out they wern't. Perhaps you could take the picture of your daughter, and make it a christmas ornament?
