In the US the majority of our homes are heated with electricity, gas or propane. Many people have fireplaces but they are usually used for emotional comfort and not to heat our houses.

We have an electric heat pump as our only source of heat. We have also discussed getting a woodburning stove for when it gets very cold. I had one in the cabin I lived in in college, it was pretty big and could heat the entire place nicely. If you plan ahead, you can go out and get your own wood if you have friends with some land and trees, you have to let the wood "season" and dry out for a year before you burn it though. I'm sure the price of a cord of wood varies on the time of year and where you live, but it has to be cheaper than oil. We decided against putting one in our present house, because it would cost upwards of $800 for the stove, pipe, heat sheild and installation, and we wouldn't be living here long enough to make that money back. It also doesn't work with our floorplan, so it could be a liability when we sell. Hope this rambling helps you some...

We have have central heat and air although our houses here in Florida are not really designed for the cold. I wish I still had a fire place. I miss that in the winter time especially when it's this cold like this year.

I have central heating and air. I used to love having an oil furnace. It was just pretty cozy to me. More expensive than what I have now (heat pump), but very enjoyable.
