I have 2 beagles, one of them has just been diagnosed with cancer. The vet says that it has spread throughout his body and he cannot be saved. He said that it is cancer of the bone marrow. Has anyone of you had similar fate with your dogs?

No, not recently. When I was really young (about 5) I had this small black dog. I loved that dog so much. He got sick with cancer and my grandfather took him out back (on the farm) and put him out of his misery. It was so bad. The dog was so wracked with pain and there was nothing else we could do. We had one more dog and he eventually was run over. So, we had cats ever since then.

Hi! I'm so sorry to hear this. I am going through a similar thing with my cat. Two and a half years ago he had about a grapefruit sized tumor taken out which had not spread. A year and half ago, he had more tumors. This time they told me they couldn't do anything because the tumor was on his liver and kidneys. No one expected him to survive, but he is still with me! Give your dog all the love you can, that helps as much as anything, I think. Prayer helps, too! ((hugs))

Beagle dogs - Beagles
This is very sad for you amd your family to have a pet diagnosed with such an awful disease. We haven't had any animals with cancer but have had to have a couple put to sleep because of other things. One was bitten by a snake for the third time in 5 weeks and as a result suffered some brain damage. The other was hit by a car and although the vet said he could try to save her he didn't hold out much hope. It was hard but in both instances we did what we thought was the right thing. There comes a point when the hard decision has to be made and ask whether it is preferably to have your pet put to sleep and end their suffering. Good luck and I hope that you are not quite so sad about the situation now, as you were when you posted this discussion some 3 weeks ago.

I am so sorry for the bad news you received. Our pets become like family to us and I know it must have been painful to hear the news.

I haven't, but 2 of my mom's dogs have-they were both Great Pyrnees. Not bone marrow cancer, some other kind that spread. They both actually lasted quite awhile after the diagnosis. The second one lasted for about 5 years lol. Ended up putting her down because of her age/hip problems. Cancer is pretty common in pure bred dogs. Just enjoy him while he's here, make him comfortable, and when he starts showing signs that he's in pain, you'll know when the time's right. So sorry for the bad news, it's hard with a pet, they're like family.

Me too! My dog was diagnosed with some cancer of the lymph nodes. The vet couldn't do nuts about it...I had to arrange for the poor dog to be put down.:(

Oh sweetie, I'm so sorry. I have an 18 month old beagle, and although he's not had cancer, my doberman had bowel cancer quite a few years ago, and all I remember is that my parents wanted him to stop suffering as quickly as possible. My condolences go out to you and your family. Pets aren't people, but I feel we should treat them as such when it comes to who we call family. It will be hard, but letting go of your furry family may be what is best for him.

I am so sorry to hear about this. I know it is very difficult to hear that your pet is so ill and can't be saved. I myself just had my dog diagnosed for diabetes. He was in kidney failure this morning. We took him to the vet and they are keeping him for a few days to stabilize his kidneys and put him on insulin to see if he will do better. He has stabilized for the time being and things are hopeful. I am worried sick about him, but when I read your post, I felt compelled to comment, I know for the short time I had to think of putting him down I was heart broken. He is like a member of hte family. I know you must be heart broken right now. My prayers and thoughts are with you through this time.
