Zebra Crossings

I've been using zebra crossings for years and I thought that the driver is supposed to wait until the pedestrian is on the other side, before going across the crossing, but in the past couple of days I've had to speed up because: A car went past when I was half way across. A car just missed my back, because he couldn't wait for me to make one more step and I've had to quickly jump back onto the path because a car didn't stop. I was just wondering, am I the one who's wrong? should pedestrians run as fast as possible across crossing because drivers have to be someone in a rush or am I right and the drivers are actually breaking the law?

Legally, pedestrians have the right of way, but this world has gotten so fast paced, the drivers don't care anymore. Everyone is always late for something, in a hurry to get somewhere, no one takes time to have courtesy for other people. It's the same in parking lots, people drive through there like they are on the freeway sometimes. I put my kids in a basket, even though they are getting a bit big for that, because I am afraid some idiot is going to run them over.

it'a all in kodex. when pedestrian has only one foot on crossing a car is supposed to stop. but let's face it, drivers dont care about pedestrians. i had many times such situations, but not only i was already on the crossing but i had 2 steps to get on the other side. drivers are ignorants!

I definatley answered this already, but my answer seems to have been deleted for some unkown reason. Anyway, what I said was, I've been a learner driver for a good few years now and I've read the Highway Code several times, it actually states in there that if someone has just one foot on the crossing the car HAS to stop, it's no optional, even if the pedestrian is on the other side of the road, the car still has to stop and wait until the pedestrian is safely across.

lauczi is correct. Drivers don't have to stop if you are still on the path but as soon as you step onto the road, they are legally obliged to stop. I think a lot of drivers either don't learn that sort of thing or forget. Some just think "well, my car will hurt you more than you will hurt my car if I run you over" so they don't care. Even at a crossing where there is a lollipop lady outside my son's school, there have been a few drivers who carried on even when the lollipop lady was in the middle of the road waiting for children to cross. It just proves how selfish some people are.

Just thought I would mention that there are only 2 places where pedestrians don't have right of way (in the UK at least). They are motorways and dual carriageways(because people aren't even supposed to walk on them or try to cross them!) but anywhere else, if the pedestrian is already touching the road, they have right of way and the cars must slow down, it just doesn't happen, probably because drivers know that no one can do anything about their rudeness.

No you are not the one in the wrong the Driver is he is suppose to wait until you are safe and sound on the other Side so you could have actually reported him if you got the Lisence Plate which I know you do not think of when you are scared

I did think of getting the licence plate, but he was gone before I even turned around (after getting safely on the path.)

i'm learning to drive just now and so know the highway code backwards. Drivers should stop if someone is waiting to cross and they must stop if people are on the crossing and wait until the crossing is clear.

I've heard cars have to slow down if they see someone is going to cross the road (this means bying close by the crossing) and actually have to stop once you have one foot on it. I walk to another location of my work 4 days a week and I cross 3 or 4 zebra crossings on the way over there. I allmost lost my toes the other day because I allready was on the crossing and this guy just stepped on it and drove right by me at an idioticly high speed! I've also had people driving up behind me before I finished the crossing, it's not nice. I should mention I walk pretty fast and run a lot of times to get across the crossing, and I allways stick up my hand and greet the people to thank them for stopping; even though it's a thing they are obligated too and I shouldn't have to thank them for it. I hope being kind and polite (in general but also in traffic) will make people more mellow and realize it's not just a law you have to stop for pedestrians, it's also a good and nice thing to give these people a chance to cross the road.

people who are driving are impacient and in a hurry most of the time. i would wait until i can safely clear them...if i can make it before the cross then i go..if not i wait until they're safely away or almost crossed. pedistrians should be aware in case idots do something like that...but then people who drive should be more careful as well. some people just really don't know all the rules...i think people here have proved it.

My country doens't give a damn about zebra crossing.. we even have traffic lights to stop the traffic to let the pedestrian cross the road.. but some people just wouldn't even stop!!! it makes me so frustrating to see this kind of unscrupulous drivers in my country.. why don't they just bang a wall and DIE just like that? running a red light in a zebra crossing is just like killing someone off the road.. what if that person didn't look out for cars? i bet you'll kill that person.. so BE responsible.. and STOP you damn car!!?!

Drivers are ignorant anymore. It's really sad. They don't care if you are handicap or have a child, they still want to run you over. It makes me irate!

I live in the Steiermark, Austria and a few days ago in the newspaper they said that 5 people had been killed this year while using pedestrian crossings! One teaches children to use them, but now I am adding that they better make sure first that the car has seen them and is slowing down before actually crossing. Pedestrian crossings just seem to be decorations on the roads!

legaly the pedestrian has the right away if a person is at a corner and there is no walking man and the person wants to cross of course with no traffic yes you are in the wright. my family and I were down town one night and this guy dosnt even stop for us we had to jump back on the sidewalk and we even had the walking man he had the nerv to gives us a look when he was in the wrong. I know how you feel i am the same way.

The problem is with the drivers..Its not fault with the pedestrians. There are always such persons who ignore all the traffic rules.Bcoz of such persons many innocent people got affected.Such persons should be punished severely..

yes, they have to stop. pedestrians are supposed to be the first priority. i don't think you are wrong here and we as pedestrians don't even have to walk really fast. they must wait right?

It is the duty of the drivers to stop and let a pedestrian cross the road. But these days nobody cares for other. So you have to take care of yourself. If we go in for a study of the accidents occur in a year in a city, I feel we will find that in a high number of cases the driver could have averted the accident. Other than few old school of Drivers no one cares now for the pedestrians.

Those drivers are definately breaking the law. My law (in USA anyway) drivers cannot go until the pedestrian is ON the curb of the other side. If a cop was around, they would get a nasty ticket.

Here in Canada, cars are supposed to wait until pedestrians have completely crossed the street. Unfortunately, in most of the cities, people don't.

Zebra Crossing - Zebra Crossing
I think it is the rule for the pedestrians to cross the road only over the Zebra Crossings.. and if they drivers can't wait asecond or two they they are breaking the traffic rules... and thay should be made paid for that bcoz in that hurry i can lose her life or can become a physically handicapped for his/her whole life....

im a driver myself and hardly ever walk anywhere anymore, when it comes to zebra crossings its frustrating if a pedestrian really takes the mickey by crossing ridiculously slowly, however you are right saying that drivers should wait until pedestrians are COMPLETELY off the crossing, even if they still have one foot on it is illegal for the driver to pass over the crossing. its bad practice for drivers but i guess that were just impatient and as much as i really try not to do this i sometimes do when im in a hurry, but never until the pedestrian is way out of my path, i would never doing if they were crossing towards my side of the road, thats just dangerous!!!!
