Children with fevers

Our family doctors and pediatricians have always seemed to recommend giving ibuprofen or children's tylenol to bring down a fever. However, a new doctor I am seeing recommends letting a fever run it's course to help the body battle whatever infection (viral or bacterial) is ailing it at the time. I see the benefits of both recommendations. Which would you choose for your child? Medicate or let the fever run its course (provided it doesn't go too high of course)? Also, how high would you let it go before choosing to medicate? Thanks for sharing.

I totally believe in helping them feel better. Yes the fever will run it's course, but the ibuprofen or tylenol helps them feel better while the sickness lasts. It's like having a sprained ankle and taking Advil for the pain. The sprain will get better with or without the Advil, BUT the Advil helps you feel better while waiting for it to heal.
Don't let your child be miserable while he or she has a fever, give them Ibuprofen or Tylenol. I would never let my little baby suffer if I could help him feel better!
I have a 22 month old boy and a 14 yr old girl.

I understand your viewpoint. I guess the new debate though is whether the child actually suffers more by medicating too quickly and not letting the body try to fight back on it's own. Some physicians claim that by medicating it extends the illness and then the child has the symptoms for a longer period of time. Still tossing all of the opinions around and doing more research but I appreciate your input.

In the case of my children i would medicate as soon as they showed a fever as four out of my five suffered from febrile convulsions and for a child to needlessly go through something like that so i would never leave a fever untreated

Wow! I'm so sorry to hear they went through that. It is unusual for a child to develop febrile seizures unless the fever goes pretty high. To have four out of your five children go through this must have been so scary.

Normally I try to bring down the fever with other methods before resorting to "medicating" I believe no adays people are medicating when there is no need for it. Unless the fever was extremly high and other methods alone were not helping to bring the fever down, then yes - I would give my child the meds.
My childrens pediatrician will not even perscribe Antibiotics for most of the illnesses that normally you would get an antibiotics.

This is what I generally do at home too. I'm not against using medications to help when they are called for but I just dont' want to resort to them for every little thing either.

My girls run high fevers so I usually only give them medication if it is changing there behavior. If they are just miserable then I figure they should get the rest they need so I offer the meds.

I use medication to be honoust, it helps quit fast. Plus if a child has fever it has a lot of other complaints as well, for instance it can not really sleep good or eat proparly. Plus the medication does not really harm or does it? I do not want my children to suffer plus it causes a lot of tention as well. Therefore I do chose to use medication like paracetamol. Do not get me wrong I am not a big fan of medicine, I just make a selection of what I find acceptable.

My son's pediatrician has recommended letting his fever run its course but no higher than 101 degrees. She said that a temperature that goes beyond that signifies an infection and will probably need antibiotics. She is not a fan of antibiotics for everything.

whenever a body get a infected by viral or bacterial, it comes out in the form of fever. having a fever tells us that the body is fighting the virus/bacteria. if we dont take any medications then the body will battle it out and eventually remove the infection, although this process may take a while. to make above process short we take medications to recover faster. there are several factors i feel that need to be considered like some children may be alergic to some medications while some leave them too weak. medications has its own pros n cons.leaving them aside i would use it cause recovery is faster than the other one!!!!

I agree, a little fever, nothing and let it run its course, but a high fever, take something! Both of my kids have had fevers already this fall, and I am afraid this is just the begining.

Our pediatrician also told us that it doesn't hurt to let a low fever run its course. My 4 year old will normally come down with a fever before any other symptoms, even with a simple cold. If her fever is low I will let it be. There was only one time that I had to give her medication for a fever and that was when she had a bad virus and her fever spiked to 103. Also, I take into consideration if the fever is causing discomfort to my child then I will give her something. If she's not bothered by it or it's not keeping her awake at night then I think it's best to let it run its course.

Today's physicians are easy to prescribe antibiotic for their children.
They are wrong.
I believe that in game there is the fact that they earn commissions if they succeed in making to sell you determine medicines.
All this against the health of the patients.
When we were small we recovered today immediately it is not this way

I let the fever run until it's 101, after that I medicate which has only been a few times. Most of the time the fever run it's self out below 101 and the children seem to have fewer Doctor visits when they get sick compared to their friends.

It depends how old the child is.
The younger, the less temerature they can handle.
I never give anything until the temeprature is high.
My doctor never pushes medications, and says that it all depends onhow the child is acting. If she has 104 fever and is still running around feeling good, thenm don't give anything. If she looks really bad, and has low fever, then try giving something.
I personally don't like to give much medications, because everything has a side effect. The pain and fever medications put the liver in danger, if used a lot.
Nowadays everybody is over medicated and I think our bodies will forget how to fight themselves!
Good Luck!

depending on the severity of the fever is what you should do, have a little fever nothing, have a serious fever, take something
