Thumb sucking
My daughter is 14 months old and she has this habit of thumb sucking. Someone told us to try some medicine you get at the chemist and is very helpful. We bought that too and applied on her thumb but the same has not helped..
Can any of you please tell me how to get my kid out of this problem ?? I’ve been told if she continues like this – her teeth will be affected… so also her thumb.. hence am worried – seek your advices and suggestions

Hmnn.. could try the Neem juice..hope so that it works. But the probability it will work is very low, since the medicine which we had tried was awfully bitter and that had not worked either. But whats the harm in trying. As for the cloth tying we already tried that.. Didn't work too. She manages to remove it of or would cry bitterly till we took it of.
Thanks for your suggestions.

I know this is gonna sound cruel and im sorry but it worked. My sister sucked her thumb up untill 7. my mom tried oil, hot sauce and all types of spices to make her stop. None of them worked. Then one day she was playing outside in the dirt and my uncle saw her get ready to put her thumb in her mouth. He took a little rolley polley bug and smashed it on her thumb. she screamed her head off for a while and my mom yelled at my uncle but she never sucked her thumb again.

i can understand your anxiety, but just chill out for a while. donot do too much of anything and donot make the child conscious. this might lead to some other problem. my niece had exactly the same thing and my sister resorted all possibilities but in vain.
this phase is delicate and pass away very subtly, u need not worry. i wud advise you to engage your daughter in some task always. ask her to hold something, or help u in house hold, keep her hands occupied and engaged all thru the day.
hope this helps

It really looks good to see a baby sucking thumbs and can be akward for the parents in front of guests or other peoples..Can I think there is not much thing to do.. It will naturally go out as the time passes and in that time u also have to insist her not to insert her fingers in her mouth....

Some kids suck their thumbs. They have shown where some even start while in the womb. It's just part of life. You don't need to worry about her teeth due to this. Her sucking her thumb won't do anything to damage her teeth. Who ever told you that one was telling you wrong. Check with an Orthodontist on it.
When I was little I sucked my thumb and my mother was worried as well because she'd been told the same thing. When she asked the Orthodontist he looked at her and stated my thumb sucking would not damage my teeth. It would not cause them to stick out or look like bugs bunny. That people had been spreading that lie for ages.
Just let her suck her thumb. She's normal and you needn't worry about it.

I found just constantly removing the thumb from the mouth and distractions worked for me. Distractions are good. A friend bandaged her thumb in her hand lightly for a few minutes at a time after removing it from the childs mouth it worked for her I never tried it though

Thumbsucking is the process of sucking on the thumb for oral gratification. It is a powerful need in infants, and is a normal activity with its peak occurrence at about age two. If thumbsucking continues past age 4, malocclusion of the teeth (abnormal contact between the teeth of the upper and lower jaw) may develop.
Thumbsucking can be an important source of pleasure for an infant. Sucking can result in increased weight gain in premature infants and less crying. Thumbsucking is most common when the child is hungry or tired.
Some parents are concerned with the thumbsucking and may even try to restrain the infant or child. In most cases this is not necessary. Should thumbsucking persist, and the child is listless and apathetic the situation should be investigated. This may result from depression, boredom, isolation, or a problem between the child and parents. Malocclusion may occur if the thumbsucking continues past 4 years of age, or until permanent teeth erupt.
There is no definitive treatment for persistent thumbsucking, but there are several options you can try:
* Use a bitter substance, being careful NOT to use something that may be poisonous to a small child!
* Create a contract with the child, making a mutual agreement with goals and rewards
* Use paradoxical therapy in which the situation is reframed psychologically so the child no longer finds it gratifying
* Use dental appliances -- probably best and most effective option

i dont think there is much that can be done, as the child will choose when they want to stop sucking their thumb. but i have heard that it affects their teeth as well.
