Should children witness childbirth?

Due to a power outage, only one paramedic responded to
the call. The house was very dark so the paramedic asked Kathleen, a 3-yr old girl, to hold a flashlight high over her mommy so he could see while he helped deliver the baby. Very diligently, Kathleen did as she was asked.
Mommy pushed and pushed and after a little while, Connor
was born. The paramedic lifted him by his little feet and spanked him on his bottom. Connor began to cry.
The paramedic then thanked Kathleen for her help and asked
the wide-eyed 3-yr old what she thought about what she had just witnessed.
Kathleen quickly responded, "He shouldn't have crawled in
there
in the first place......smack his butt again!"

LOL Eagle...My daughter had sent that to me and I laughed and laughed. I did change the one word, but that is something a little one would say. I don't think I would really have a child see Childbirth, but I had to share that one with my friends here on MyLot...

Yes I think It would depend greatly on the maturity of the child, as not all would be able to appreciate the magnitude of the event! And in some cases it might actually help deter some of these promiscuous young teens! haha

I think it's completely natural for a child to witness childbirth. It is a beautiful miracle of life but can also be memorable enough for a child to see the responsibility and pain involved in bringing a child into this world. It's not all play and cutesy like many young girls are socialized to think and then end up fantasizing about having a baby to dress up and play with.
The experience of watching a birth will be forever imprinted in their mind as the miracle it is.

You bring up a good point. It might be a deterrent to have children until you are more mature if you witness this as a child.

aww hehe I think that was a cute lil story. I think it depends on the child. I think my older children would be ok to watch...probably even my 4 year old but not my youngest child. She gets scared if she see's me cry even so if I were to give birth & scream and cry from pain she would probably freak out. I dont think it's a bad thing for a child to be present.

its cool but in my opinion, maybe not, for the child is to young, the mind is not really set for that and it could be trauma or somethinhg.thinking her mom is dying, bloods, well i guess in your story the girl helped the paramedic, but she also got shocked,

i was ready to get really serious until i saw the punchline. now that im done laughing my a** off, i dont think letting a young child witness childbirth would be the best idea. if they cant understand what is happening it may be very traumatising for them and they may end up hating the baby for putting their mother in such pain

That's a real cute and lovely little story... clearly depicts the trait called 'innocence'. But seriously speaking, I also don't think children should be allowed or made to see childbirth. After all, their level of intellect and innocence doesn't approve of the same...

I didn't have the joy of having a child, but have nephew and nieces, a lot. In my opinion children should not witness child birth, If at any rate they do, adults must explain how babies are born in a manner that they will appreciate the hardship they see in child birth. They need understand that mommy is in pain only for a while, and joy comes when the baby is born.
