Anyone here like rats as pets? Are they good for kids?

two fancy rats from Petco - They were the sweetest and smartest pets. Loved to cuddle on my shoulder. My roommates cats were scared of them! Looks like they want to eat them here.

I'm hoping someone on my lot likes these little guys too. Rats as pets are so sweet! And smart. They can be trained to come to their names and do tricks. I had some but had to give them up. Are they good pets for a 5 year old? They seem better than hamsters. Rats live 2 to 5 years, correct? Oh and I just have to show off the rats I got from Petco. We moved and couldn't keep them.:( Princess and Nikki My daughter wants a pet of her own but I don't want to bring another cat or dog into the house. Do you think rats would be good for her?

rats - social creatures that are smart and can be quite entertaining, inexpensive and a good addition to the family
Rats can be great pets, they are smart, do not make much noise and can be entertaining. Probably won't cost much to feed and bedding has never been an issue for my bunny that needs similar bedding. she is quiet too..Good luck and be sure they do take care of it...the kids didn't with our bunny and so we adopted her. They are social too. get 2!

Yeah, rats would be much less expensive than a rabbit. Rabbits need to be spayed/neutered and take up a large amount of space (at least 8 square feet per rabbit). Don't get your kids a pet if you expect them to actually care for it though. Rats only live 3 to 5 years generally, but a rabbit makes an especially poor choice because who knows what kids are doing in 8 to 12 years. Make sure to know that rats can cost you some money though. They are somewhat prone to tumors which will cost around $100 to $200 to have removed. Minor vet visits may also be needed.

We have had rats as pets (along with rabbits, hamsters, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, a blackbird and a sparrow!). He was very friendly and loved to get inside my shirt and peek out to watch TV. The only problem really is that they wee all the time and don't save it up to go outside like other pets. Your child would love to have one but she may loose one or two friends who don't share the same feelings for rats. Some of my daughter's friends totally freaked out!!

I do not believe that a rat would be a good pet for a five year old.I heard that they have all kinds of disease.and i wouldnt want my kid to have one if they have diseases i like rats but i just wouldnt get my kid one i do not think it is a good choice.

Rats actually don't usually have diseases to pass onto children. But there have been cases of rats from pet mills in pet stores sold with odd diseases. I'd go with adoption instead of buying. Usually the pet will die of the disease rather than carry it. But due to the horrible conditions of pet mills, who knows nowadays.

Yes, I have two little rattie dears. We call them Wilma and Betty. Most people I think do not know that they are actually very social and intelligent creatures! They make awesome pets!!! Here's a great site for more info: http://www.petrats.org/index.html

I think rat is also dangerous for kids because my cousin which is in the age of 3 years old have a rat. As a kid sometimes he forgot to give his rat a food like bread or any food that rat can eat so one day i visit the cage of his rat and i see that the one rat eat his partner because he is really hungry. I think that there is also possibility that the finger of your daughter can sting by her pet rat.

I never can't consider as a good pet. I mostly used to ran behind them if I see any one of them in my home. All the rats are very rude. They simply eat our things and make disturbances and I can't imagine a rat as a pet. I think it is not a wise decision to give a pet like a rat.

There are many reasons for choosing a rat as a pet. My original reason for getting a pair of rats was down to my living arrangements. Since I was a very young child, there was always animals around me but since leaving home and setting up on my own, I hadn't owned any pets of my own. At the time I decided I needed a pet I was living in an upstairs flat and working full time, so that discounted cats and dogs really. I felt that guinea pigs and rabbits would be too smelly in a small flat and I find birds too noisy and fish not interactive enough, so really that left the rodent family.

i had rats a few years back. its for a project its not good to have them as pets because they really love to bite and aggressive during mating time. maybe you can give your daughter a mice or a hamster but not rats.

I find rats to be disgusting and dirty. I cannot stand them and I would never consider allow them anywhere near my children. The same goes for mice.

ugh no, I cna't stand rats at all. But I know lots of people who have had pet rats and think they're wonderful. And they are nicer than say, ferrets. As for your daughter, you shoudl ask her. It sounds like you're looking for a caged pet.

We had 2 pet rats a couple of years ago. They were so nice and friendly, they never tried to bite unless u had food smell on your fingers but they would just nibble, not bite. Ive had hamsters before and they used to bite all the time and we never had problems with our rats biting! I think people are just scared or grossed out by them because they are rats and they just think of nasty disease ridden sewer rats, not pet rats!

My middle daughter had a pet rat named Rupert from the ages of 9 - 14. I was really off-put when she brought him home, but he grew on the family. He had a gentle disposition and would ride about on my daughter's shoulder. She really loved him and we were all sad when he passed away at age five. I would definitely recommend a rat over a hamster, mouse, or gerbil. In my experience they are usually friendly and highly intelligent! Best wishes!

christmas - sharing happiness
well this is one thing very interesting about rats Laughter might not be confined or unique to humans, despite Aristotle's observation that "only the human animal laughs". The differences between chimpanzee and human laughter may be the result of adaptations that have evolved to enable human speech. However, some behavioural psychologists argue that self-awareness of one's situation, or the ability to identify with somebody else's predicament, are prerequisites for laughter, so animals are not really laughing in the same way that we do. It was discovered that rats emit short, high frequency, ultrasonic, socially induced vocalization during rough and tumble play, and when tickled. ha so they can make good friends... just remember at the end that lil thng will grow fatter n fatter n u thhinner n thinner!!
