Does anybody have any tips for me. I am still a pretty novice seamstress and mostly do embellishments, I haven't made anything but pillowcase dresses from scratch. Thanks for any tips / advice you can give me on getting started with it!!!

I love my overlocker (same as a serger), it halves the time of making even quite complicated things. Best thing is just to practice doing simple things with it, maybe some storage bags for shoes or clothes would be one project, and by the time you have done those you will have the hang of it with no trouble.

great, I was noticing a pair of my jeans with a thin knee area, maybe I'll try making crop pants out of them - that should be pretty simple ?

You lucky dawg you! I have wanted a serger for so long now. Nobody takes my request seriously. I really don't have any tips for you, but wanted to congratulate you on your having one.
If it were me, I would check the web for some tips. I have found so many tips for crafts, sewing, knitting, cooking, etc. I know I have some links on another forum I belong to. Let me check it out and get back to you with them.

thanks, I haven't even taken it out of the box yet, too busy with holiday stuff, I need to though because I want to make some pillow case dresses to list on ebay for Valentines. Maybe after next weekend. :)

I have a serger. I learned by sewing costumes for a high school play and the lady in charge of costumes sent me home with one. She showed me how to thread it and explained how it worked and I was on my own. But I loved it. There are some great books at craft stores or places like Joanne Fabrics or even go to your local library. Hey what am I saying? There is a boat load of info on the net. its really not as complicated as it looks. I even had my husband sewing with one while I was making dresses for my one daughters wedding. Alot depends on how many threads your serger takes. Mine has four but I can sew with only two if I wish. Sergers sew much faster then sewing machines and curves are a bit harder to control. It is a good idea if you have a sewing machine as well as your serger. There are some things that are just much easier to do on a sewing machine. Sewing knit material is much easier on a serger then a sewing machine as you can adjust different feed dog tensions. The best way to get better is get as much info as you can and practice. Oh yeah you have to get use to not pinning everything when you serge.

My mom have a serger machine at her house. I had tried few time. It not so hard to handle but you have to be carefull when using it. Make sure you kid cannot reach it and yourself must be alert when using it.
Good luck with your project on pillow cases. It my favourite too.

this is the one that cuts the fabric as it goes along and makes a real pretty professional looking edge on things.
