What Should I Read Next?

My problem is I've read virtually everything by all my favourite authors - I need to expand my horizons. What do you suggest? High-Brow, Low-Brow - doesn't matter - I just need to find some good authors I haven't tried yet.

I try to read as widely as possible. I guess in fiction, my favourite authors are, in no particular order (although it changes each day): Dickens, Rushdie, Delillo, Self, Amis, Balzac, Scott, Kesey, Austen. For lighter reading, I read a lot of crime thrillers and enjoy a fair bit of science fiction. I read a lot of non-fiction too, particularly history, religion and science. I guess one area I ought to explore - the list of my favourite authors only includes one who doesn't write in English. Any good non-English writers whose work has been translated?

No, but I'll check them out on your recommendation.

I like Jeffrey Deaver. They're suspenseful thrillers all with twists. I also like Alice Hoffman because all of her stories are magical.
