I think Shawshank Redemtion is one of the best movies of all times but I put The Green Mile right up there beside it.
I think they are two of the best movies I have ever seen.

I love the Shawshank Redemption. It is one of my favourite movies. In fact my husband gave it to me for christmas. I like it better than the Green Mile. However, the Green Mile was a better book then the short story that became Shawshank Redemption. I ususally do not like Stephen King movies because they simply cannot recreate the horror Stephen King writes.

I agree that they are both terrific movies but I really do think Shawshank is the better of the two.
After watching Shawshank I always think, "now that is what a movie is supposed to be".
I think that Shawshank is the movie anyone who wants to make a movie shoudl wathc because it did just about eveything right. Directing, score, choosing a cast, lighting, developing characters, etc.
The Green Mile is a really great film but it doesn't give me that feeling and having both of the movies in front of me I will always choose to watch Shawshank first.

Are you referring to another besides the one with Harrison Ford as the lead actor? It was a good movie too.

No not the one with Harrison Ford, although it was also a great movie.
There was a T.V. show that aired from 1963 until 1967 called the figitive but sometime in the early 70's there was a movie mad "The Fugitive" it was a black and white movie. I cant remember who stared as the figitive but it was a really good movie

I have never seen The Green Mile. From what I have heard about it, I am confident that I would like it. However, it would have to be pretty incredible to beat Shawshank in my opinion. I would have never believed that a movie about prison could be so uplifting. It was simply amazing. Both Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins should have won Oscars for their performances, although I don't know who would have been lead and who would have been supporting. Maybe that's what hurt them there?
Shawshank is simply incredible. I have heard Morgan Freeman say in interviews that the overwhelming majority of fans he meets tells him that this is their favorite of all of his movies, and I can certainly understand why!

I agree they are both great movies. and stephen King is a wonderful write so that helped. I will say that the books were so much better and more graphic than the movies but the movies did give the book it's due justice.

Certainly the green mile
This film is truelly one that sticks in the mind. Whilst praising the small joys of life such as pet mice it also manages to deal with central ideas of immortality and the system of capital punishment. The heartwrenching tale of John Coffee is told without wallowing in sentimentality or pity allowing the flaws in the American prison system to be seamlessly exposed. Tom Hanks is perfect as the prison guard caught between his duty and what he knows to be morally wrong whilst "Percy" inspires true hatred from all watching. "Coffee" himself is completely endearing in his child- like innocence. I cried more for the depravity of the human race and injustice in life in the last 15 minutes of this film than I have ever cried about anything in my life before.

I like both of the movies equally ... in both movies a man is punished for something he didn't do. Quite a lesson there in real life.

I have seen both Shawshank Redemption as well as Green Mile. Both of them I have seen it alone.Watching both of them alone has given me the right atmosphere of appreciating them.
Shawshank Redemption
=======================
Very inspirational. Moreover the sophistication of the banker potrayed by Tim Robbins is excellent. Morgan Freeman does an exceptional acting also. I rate this as one of my best films.
Green Mile
==========
Great story. Very good acting by the Tom Hanks and the big gentlemen.Exceptionallly tocuching. I would recommend watching this movie also but not with family.

I don't even think you can compare these two films as far as which is better. They are both well directed, well cast and of course have solid storylines, but they are completely different.
I have always said that Shawshank is by far the best straight "human drama" movie ever made (imo of course). There's no question that the casting is incredible of course and it does not get stale with multiple viewings.
The Green Mile is an intriguing story but I would not classify it as a "human drama" since it definitely has a sci-fi flair to it. As far as I'm concerned Shawshank has to win the competition between these two because it remains a solid movie without any "hook" to it.
As far as the member that said something about both movies telling a story of an innocent person being imprisoned, while I respect your opinion, I don't see that as being a principle part of both movies. I think the stories could have worked just as well if they had done the crimes. It was more that they were different than the normal prisoners and having to become adapted to that life that made it unique. And I'm sure that there are people that wind up committing crimes that they might have found justified that would find themselves as fish out of water in prison. JMO though.

I affirm that both belong to the list of best movies ever made but if i have to choose between the two, i'll go for Shawshank Redemption. It was a superb craft! It reminds us that no matter what walk of life we belong to, whenever we sink into deep frustrations and difficulties of life..we could always go through it as long as we never loose perseverance and hope.
