Ladies, have you ever done your own oil change, or changed a tire on your car?

I have often done my own car maintenence when money was tight and I had no choice. When my girls were growing up I taught them how to check their oil level and change their own oil in their car, and also how to change a tire if they would ever need to. Have you ever changed your own oil in your car, or had to change your own tire without help?

Wow!! That's really ambitious! I've done brake jobs, but I did them with my Dad telling me what to do and in what order. (He was disabled and this was how he helped.) You're right, they are a p.i.t.a.!! Good for you for finding the courage to do it on your own:-)

Lucky you!! I'd stick with that idea if I were you, hehehe. (I'll have to remember that if I ever have a hubby again, lol) Thanks for your response!

This was one of the first things I was taught by my mom of all people and was a requirement for them to let me dirve. I am like you I act as though I have no clue to get by without having to do it. He would not let if I tried though. I will make this be one of the first things I teach my kids when it is there time to drive. I have AAA and I let them change a tire it I do not have to wait over a hour.

Somehow I missed a bunch on this page lol. That's great that you know how to check your oil. I'm amazed at how many people (not just women) that don't know how to do this basic task. I have AAA too, they're a godsend sometimes! I know how to change my own tires and all, but often when the store puts them on it's with one of those power wrenches and it's impossible to get them off by hand...and that's why I got AAA!

yes, my father insisted that I learn how to and demonstrate I learned before he would allow me to learn to drive my car. I learned how to check and adjust the points with a timing light, how to check and change the oil, do the brake fluid, how to add water to and how to charge the battery, how to change the spark plugs, add wiper fluid, and radiator antifreeze, change fuses, install an air filter and oil filter and how to do a "lube" as well as change out a tire. i did not learn, however, how to change transmition fluid

That's great Modestah. We did the same things with my girls when they were first learning to drive. It always helps to have a basic understanding of how cars work, and that they need regular upkeep to keep them running smooth and trouble free!

Yep, I have done both. The first time I had to change a flat, no one would stop and assist me, I had a doberman in the van with me. However, he was passed out cold, I had just picked him up from the vet, he had just had his ears cropped. So he would not have been too aggressive LOL. But, there is a lot of things I have learned to do, pretty much to the point that if something happened to my s/o I would be able to take care of just about anything. I've even put up wire fencing, taken care of a herd of goats, etc. Not much us Southern women can't do! lol

Boy, I definitely understand what you're saying lol. I grew up on a farm and we all had the 'do what you have to do' attitude. (I never had a herd of goats, but had a herd of milking cows...about 50 - 75) Strung a lot of wire fencing myself over the years. There isn't a thing us gals can't do when we put our mind to it and it needs done! Thanks for writing!

Oh goodness yes I came from a male dominated household having 12 big brothers and they thought that oil changes and tire changes were womens work so I learned very early on how to do that. I think it is a good thing for a woman to be independant and control those aspects of her life so good for you.

Wow pastorkayte, that's a large family! I also think it's a great idea to know how to do these kinds of things, you just never know when you're going to need to do them on your own whether it's because of financial difficulty, or whatever.

I have never changed my own oil, but I do know how thanks to my dad and brothers. But I have changed my own tire. I blew a tire in the middle of no where once and I had to change it myself cause no one else was around. It isn't that bad to do

Ah, Dads and brothers, lol...they're full of that kind of knowledge (thank heavens!!) It is very handy to learn how to change a tire though, just for the instance like you had out in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for your response!

I'll bet that was an interesting job! Lucky you to have a hubby who's a jack of all trades, lol. My (ex)husband knew how to do all that stuff but would never help. I changed oil and all lots of times over the years. That's good you know how to though, for if you ever get in a pinch.

Growing up, my dad taught both me and my sis how to change a tire and check the oil. Since then, 15 years later, I have lucked out in that I have found a man that actually knows how to do all that for us. But, I still know how...actually he has taught me more than my dad did!!

That's good your Dad taught both of you to do these essentials. I made sure both my girls knew how to do them when they started driving. You're lucky you have a man in your life to help you! Thanks for the input!

Lots of people never had to learn how to do either one of these things. I grew up on a farm, so changing oil and tires just kind of goes with the territory sometimes. I'm thankful that I learned that as a kid, because as an adult, I've needed to be resourceful sometimes and just do it because it needed done. When times are tight moneywise, sometimes the littlest things help. Thanks for writing!

I have never done an oil change, but probably could, I am married to a man who is a mechanic, among other things. Last time I needed a tire changed, the person who pointed it out changed it for me, but I have done it. When my first husband was ill and dying he spent time with his daughter and helped her learn things like that, and how to change the headlight in her car. Right now I am so spoiled, I rarely even fuel my own car.

Sounds like you've got a good hubby who helps you out a lot, that's great! It was nice of your first husband to teach his daughter how to do those kinds of things too. Even changing your own headlight can save a lot of money, yet so many don't know how to do simple things like that. I'm glad to read you're 'spoiled', lol, not many of us are that lucky. Happy holidays!

I have had to change my own tire on numerous occasions since I have a penchant for running over sharp objects! I have gotten very good at it actually. I only have a problem when it is a tire put on with one of those airwrenches. They put it on so tightly that you need Hercules to get it off.

It's nice to be able to do that when you really need to, isn't it?! I hear you about the air wrenches, lol. They make it harder than it needs to be when you've blown a tire on the road!

I don't know how to change the oil but am now very good at changing tires. I have a very bad habit of running over things and popping my tires. I have had trouble getting the lugnuts off after the shop has put them on. I finally figured out how to hold onto the car and jump on the tire iron! I look silly, but it is effective. LOL

I have to laugh Trace, I jump on the tire iron too when I have to do this on the road. They put those lugnuts on with speed wrenches and it's just sooooooo hard to get them off lol. I probably look like a ditz doing it, but at 100# there isn't any other way than to use bodily force hahaha.

No, I never changed a tyre, let alone changed the oil! I am not cut for that type of work I think. I think I will do the job if I have to, but while I haven't to I just let the professionals do it (or my husband)

Another old discussion raises its head to be heard! I have never changed the oil or a tire on my car. Sad isn't it? I thought about taking a course in adult ed for basic automotive stuff, but never got around to it.

Yes, I had to learn when I was a teen. My dad made us all learn. I think it's very important to know how to do basic maintenance on your own vehicle. I remember once before I was married, we had a bronco, and the battery cable was corroded, and you had to tinker with it sometimes to get the bronco to start. Once I went to start it and it wouldn't start, no matter how much I tinkered with it. I had to jump on my bycycle, ride 2 miles down the road to walmart, buy an adapter, go home and put it on. I did pretty well I think. (: My dad worked on his own vehicles, so I know quite a bit about them.

Yep. Believe it or not, I learned how in the Girl Scouts. My troop leader thought it was something we should know how to do. At the time we all thought it was stupid, but looking back I'm glad it was something we did. We were young, but it was something I kept with me and I can easily change my own if I need to. Generally I don't, my husband does, but I can do it and have done it.

I have helped my dad change my oil, but it was a different, smaller car. On the same car, I have changed my own tire, just to prove to myself I could do it! I have a mini van now and don't think I could do either.
