The legend has it, that Shah Jehan decided to construct another Taj Mahal in black marble on the other side of the river Yamuna and to connect the two by a bridge. This structure was intended to be his own tomb. It has been recorded by Tavernier: "Shah Jehan began to build his own tomb on the other side of the river but the war with his sons interrupted his plan and Aurangzeb who reigns at present is not disposed to complete it". Later gazetteers and guide books mention this story almost invariably. The irregular position of the cenotaph of Shah Jehan as compared to that of Mumtaz Mahal which occupies the exact centre of the hall is enough proof into itself.. The Mehtab Burj and the wall adjoining it opposite the Taj Mahal are generally said to be the grim remains of the proposed plan.

This is a great way to express your love on your country's heritage. I wish all of them visit this site and vote for their favourite seven wonders, i just visited that site and voted the the Taj Mahal, which i plan to visit sooner, as that was one of my wish long back. I would soon visit it before it disintegrates due to the pollution caused around it by vehicles and the yamuna river pollution.

Ya really appretiative of you to start this. TAJ MAHAL deserve its place in the 7 wonders of the world. I am saying this not because i have heard so much about it,no, its because i have been to it and i would tell you its an amazing place almost larger than life.Its so very different to look it in photos and then to look it in real life.A must visit for anyone.

yup sure! the taj mahal indeed deserves to be among the best monuments in the world! i have seen it in the moon light and nothing is quite as heavenly as that sight!!
