the high cost of windows vista, the costly hardware needed to drive vista and the ever volatile xp occupying most of the harddisk with its liveupdates paves the way for pc users to migrate to linux. Is linux going to replace windows or is macintosh going to come into the party. what's your comment?

One of the most notable feature on vista would be its graphics and security. It's a known fact that linux is one of the best in security. KDE the desktop manager for Linux would be releasing its much awaited version 4, next year. From what I read about KDE4 from other sites, its seems to me that it would be having one of the best desktop with all sorts of eye candy. If Windows XP and other previous versions of windows users are amazed to see all those 3D effects in Vista then let me tell you, all those features are already available in Linux and most of the Linux distros comes pre-configured with those features (please check the screenshot). So is it required to buy windows Vista for all the features they boast about if it is already available for free?

Yes, obviously. There are many advantages of using Linux:
1. Linux is free. Most Linux distributions can be used without any charge.
2. Linux is open source. So, you can see source code, modify it and distribute whenever you wish.
3. It is flexible. You can use Linux in varieties of operations in personal computer, in portable devices (Laptops), in data centers, in workstations, in servers...
4. It is secure. Compare the security of windows and Linux. Windows has virus problems, spy ware problems, mal-ware problems and so on. But Linux is based on UNIX standards. I haven't heard of such kind of problems in Linux.
5. Its size varies also. There are Linux distributions that can fit within a 1.44MB floppy. There is also some distributions that even doesn't fit within 2 DVDs.
6. There are some distribution that runs on CD/DVD version. So, it is easy to preview a distribution before actually installing.
So, the future of Linux is very bright. In last few years, more and more softwares are being ported and used in Linux platform. So, you can say, Linux is the way to go.

In the near future to come..I am sure that Linux will be a way ahead of microsoft..the foremost reason for that Linux is a open source and free..Being a open source there is always a possibility of better security and stability..as all pc users are now programmers..and I think there are better programmers than microsft hires...
Also due to free it is really very easy and affordable to most pc users..whereas the upcomming Microsoft Vista's pricing is sky high....

windows is more user friendly than linux .As far as gaming is concerned there are more and better games for windows than linux. So users like me who are interested in gaming prefer windows to linux.I have read in many websites that vista is very much secure than remaining windows os and the graphics are superb from the beta version of vista i`ve seen .So definetly vista

there is a strong possibility that in the near future Linux is gonna be much more used and affordable than windows. linux has versions that right now are extremely similar to windows versions so it's not gonna be a big problem for a person that's used to windows to use linux.

Though Open source is the way ahead, there are still many things lacking-drivers for various applications, printers, etc have still not been developed. I spoke to Novell for their Susse Linux and came away disappointed because they did not have drivers for many of the older devices. There are also too many problems with Open Office. Older files don't open exactly with Open Office as they did in MS Office. Still a long way to go before people could take to Linux.
